Educators Susan Sohmer, Trish Sheridan and Lauren Casciano teamed up with Meredith Baker, a Harvard graduate student working with a Kenyan orphanage, to establish a pen pal program that eventually grew into it something even bigger. After initially exchanging letters with students at the Kenyan orphanage founded by Wengari Matthai, the 77 fourth-graders-- upon learning that the orphanage relied solely on charitable donations-- began raising funds through bake sales and other school events. They donated cash as well as books to the Kenyan orphanage. Before wrapping up the school year in June, the fourth-graders and their teachers got a chance to meet face-to-face with the orphanage students through a Skype video conference. All in all, the fourth-graders made new friends an ocean away and got to experience a cultural lesson they will remember forever.
