Even folks without gardens flock to local farmers markets or visit country roadside stands so they too can capture part of the season. No offense meant to the glorious green bean or beautiful beet, but let’s be honest -- the plant everyone craves at this time is the tomato. A friend reconfirmed this affection over a recent dinner as he lamented about the condition of his tomatoes. Last year they suffered from blossom end rot, this year their skin was cracking. His woes are echoed by other gardeners. While they may fuss over all their charges, tomatoes are the favorite child of the vegetable plot and such elevated attention has made them a culinary and cultural icon. Native to Mexico, cultivation of Solanum lycopersicum dates back to 500BC, and was introduced to the rest of the world beginning with Spanish explorers. Oddly enough, the tomato’s debut in many locales was not as part of an entree, but as an ingredient in ornamental tabletop displays. How things change. Today, the Epicurious website features nearly 4,000 tomato recipes. Plus, the tomato gardener’s world has expanded with more than 7,500 varieties available, including heirlooms noted for distinct colors, shapes and flavors. At this point in the season, tomato planting time is far past and we’ve entered the days to harvest. But even if your plants succumbed to the variety of problems that plague tomatoes, push your grief aside and head to the farmers market where you can still hang onto a bit of summer. Even if you’re just filling your tote bag at the market instead of pulling from the vine, the tomato harvest brings to mind iconic cultural images such as the family gathered ‘round the kitchen table making sauce, or showing off a summer’s worth of effort at the state fair described in Garrison Keillor stories. And how interesting to note that of Andy Warhol’s 1962 artwork, the can we usually recall is “Tomato” and not the other 31 soup flavors he illustrated. Cultural references aside, for any enthusiast the greatest joy is to convert a friend who just doesn’t “get” the big deal about tomatoes. Watching their expression change to utter delight with muffled comments about the error of their ways is what keeps us coming back for more and wistfully recalling those warm summer days throughout the year.
