MEDICARE & MOST INSURANCE PLANS ACCEPTED Bringing You Advancements in Prostate Cancer Treatment Long Island Radiation Therapy is pleased to welcome Alan J. Katz, M.D., Radiation Oncologist Dr. Katz has practiced Radiation Oncology for over thirty years. He received a B.A. from Yale in 1973 and an M.D. from NYU in 1977. His residency in Radiation Oncology at NYU was completed in 1981 and he later received a J.D. from NYU in 1993. From 1991-1993, Dr. Katz was the Acting Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Montefiore Medical Center of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. From 1993-2010, he was the Director of Radiation Oncology at Winthrop-University Hospital on Long Island. During that time, he developed a program utilizing the CyberKnife to treat prostate cancer with just 5 large focused doses of radiation, as opposed to the traditional 45 treatments. Over the last five years, he has published many peer reviewed papers pertaining to the results that this innovative treatment has yielded. Most recently, he has published an article in the May 2013 edition of Radiation Oncology, which reported excellent six year results, superior to that reported with the standard 45 fractions. He has lectured on this treatment and taught other physicians throughout the globe, including Asia, Latin America and Europe. Dr. Katz has presented his data several times at the largest national meeting in radiotherapy, called ASTRO. Dr. Katz is now offering this treatment at Long Island Radiation Therapy. Using both the TomoTherapy machine in Lake Success and the Rapid ARC machine in Garden City, he is treating localized prostate cancer with five fractions. Because these machines have built-in CAT scans for localization, patients will not generally need placement of fiducial markers, making this procedure completely non-invasive. The speed with which these treatments can be done is also remarkable, averaging 15 minutes per day rather than the 45 minutes with the CyberKnife.
