BREWS FOR THE BRAVEST Bars donate $3G to Sunnyside FDNY BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO aaltamirano@queenscourier.com Firefighters at the 51st Street Fire Station in Sunnyside will now be able to get extra training thanks to a donation from a group of local bars and restaurants. On July 25, Sunnyside’s Boulevard Bars, a group of 10 bars and restaurants on and around Queens Boulevard, presented Engine 325/Ladder 163 of the 51st Street Fire Station with a $3,000 check. The money was raised in March through the Leary Firefighters Foundation during the group’s Irish Music Festival. The event, sponsored by Guinness, featured live Irish music at the participating bars. Actor Denis Leary started the Leary Firefighters Foundation in 2000 to raise funds for fire departments to get the best equipment, technology and training. “Such enthusiastic support from everyone in the community made it possible for us to present Engine 325/Ladder 163 with a check for $3,000 that will go toward helping the firefighters with their training at the firehouse,” said Melissa Navia, writer and social media manager for Sunnyside’s Boulevard Bars. Jim Duff, captain of Ladder Company 163, said the money will help build a bailout wall in the firehouse’s backyard, where firefighters will be able to practice jumping out of windows using a personal safety system. Members of Sunnyside’s Boulevard Bars include The Courtyard, Bar 43, Maggie Mae’s, PJ Horgan’s, Sidetracks, Arriba Arriba, Bliss Street Station, McGuinness Pub, Molly Bloom’s and The Gaslight. “Sunnyside’s Boulevard Bars was created out of a desire by local bar and restaurant owners to engage the neighborhood through year-round events and give back to organizations in the area whenever possible,” said Navia. All the money raised at the group’s next event, the Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Music Festival on September 7, will go towards the Sunnyside/Woodside Boys & Girls Club. KAUFMAN STUDIOS EXPANSION WILL BENEFIT AREA BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO aaltamirano@queenscourier.com The expansion that will bring Hollywood into the borough has begun. Construction has started on the back lot at Kaufman Astoria Studios to create an outdoor film set on 36th Street between 34th and 35th Avenue. The site is the only one of its kind in the city. “We’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” said Hal Rosenbluth, president at Kaufman Astoria Studios. “I stood in the middle of the street and I smiled because it had been a long time coming.” The outdoor studio space is expected to bring in more movie and TV producers because it will allow them to leave sets up for extended periods of time. Within a few days of construction, Rosenbluth said the back lot was already being used to film an upcoming film called “Beware the Night.” “It creates another service capability for producers to have in the city of New York,” said Rosenbluth. “It allows producers to do some of the shots that they have otherwise been doing on the streets of New York.” Rosenbluth said the expansion will reduce traffic and congestion and boost the economic expansion that Kaufman Astoria Studios has long provided in the area. He also said the expansion will bring the neighborhood together. Rosenbluth added the main entrance gate, to be located at 35th Avenue, will serve as an iconic symbol in the community. “When you’re in L.A., your expectations are to drive up, pull up to a gate and say ‘I want to see Mr. Spielberg,’ and now that’s going to be able to happen in Kaufman Astoria Studios,” said Rosenbluth. Construction is expected to be completed by mid- to late October. st of the 2013 THE QUEENS QueensCourier.com Place • New Construction • Newborn – 4 Years • Age Specific Classrooms • Part-Time & Full-Time Options • Learning through Stimulated Play, Music, Dance, & Discovery • Meals Included Call for more info & Registration 718.838.9243 213-54 35th Avenue, Bayside www.littleapplepreschool.com FREE Registration plus 20% OFF with this ad
