The multi-cultural event includes two days of Dragon Boat Racing, a variety of performances, and a multi-ethnic food court. The event is free and races will be held on Meadow Lake within the park rain-or-shine. Bring the entire family and have a blast as over 170 teams and more than 2,000 participants compete with each other and celebrate the “Year of the Rabbit.” From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. TUESDAY, AUGUST 20- FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 The U.S Open Qualifying Tournament is the only free tournament that lets spectators experience highlevel tennis without the prices of normal professional tournaments. The Qualifying Tournament is held at courts at the USTA National Tennis Center. Professional players compete to advance to one of the most storied tennis tournaments in the world. Although the top tier of players do not need to qualify, the majority of them will be practicing on the grounds of the USTA. Gates open at 10 a.m. KIDS’ STUFF FRIDAY, JULY 26 & SUNDAY, JULY 28 On July 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. and July 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., The New York Hall of Science is hosting a workshop that explores the way fi refl ies light up summer nights in this lesson on bioluminescence.Cost is $8 per family plus NYSCI admission. Children ages 3 to 4 (on July 10) and ages 5 to 7 (July 27) can come play in sand, create pictures using colored sand, meet live, sanddwelling animals and enjoy a snack. Cost is $18 per child and the event is limited to 12 participants. The Alley Pond Environmental Center is located at 228-06 Northern Boulevard. Bring the family and come enjoy outdoor fi lms on the waterfront in central Astoria this summer. Each Monday through August 26, the park will screen a different fi lm, starting on July 29 with “Annie.” Later in the summer, Disney’s “Brave” and The Queens County Farm Museum Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow. The Queens County Farm Museum will be hosting the 35th annual Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow. New Yorkers are invited to experience intertribal Native American dances that include 40 distinct tribes in addition to Native American cuisine, art, jewelry and craft. Gates open at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission for adults is $15 for an all-weekend pass and $5 for children ages 12 and younger. TUESDAY, AUGUST 6 From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., The New York Hall of Science will explore the physics of unconventional movements as they experiment with automobiles on ramps and build cars from recycled materials.
