Q U E E N S development A JOURNEY BACK TO HIS ROOTS After a visit to the Vatican and an honor from an Italian town, Mattone and his wife Mary Ann return to New York feeling “humbled” A man who was a builder, a developer, and a great philanthropist made a trip to Italy, and it all started with a once-in-a-lifetime invitation. This past spring, the law department of the Università di Roma Lumsa (which is located just outside the Vatican) and St. John’s University School of Law offered the opportunity to send a group of educators and students to attend a peace conference on June 20 and June 21. Joseph Mattone Senior, president and CEO of the Queens-based Mattone Group and member of the St. John’s University Board of Trustees, was asked to make the trip to his native Italy to attend the conference along with his wife Mary Ann. “In the three days that I was at the conference, I got a very good education through this high-profile event,” says Mattone. “St. John’s University was even given the rare opportunity to request that a small audience visit personally with the Pope.” That request was indeed (continued on page 4) Joseph and Mary Ann Mattone greeting the Pope.
