SATURDAY, JULY 6 Families and children are welcome to join local artists in Socrates Sculpture Park for a summer series of sculpture workshops. Each week’s workshop will have a theme and teach a certain skill. The workshop on July 6 is Upcycled Art, where kids will make a collaborative piece of art while recycling plastic materials. They will learn sculpture techniques that will let them transform plastics bottles and containers into beautiful urban art. SUNDAY, JULY 7 The 6th annual Tour de Queens bicycle race will tour the borough again this summer. Organized by Transportation Alternatives, participants will bike through Queens, visiting the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, Ridgewood, Maspeth, Rego Park, Middle Village, Forest Hills, Corona and East Elmhurst. The “rolling parade” is approximately 20 miles long, and is put on with the cooperation of the NYPD, who will be closing off intersections long enough for the tour to speed through. Registration is now open, with a cap of 1,250 riders and a fee of $15 for Transportation Alternatives members and $20 for non-members, all fees go to help the cost of the event. To register or for more information, visit www.tourdequeens.org The Urban Park Rangers are holding a saltwater fi shing workshop in Flushing EDITOR’S PICK DRAGONS SET TO ROAR SATURDAY, AUGUST 10 AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 11, The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will be held in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11. The multi-cultural event includes two days of Dragon Boat racing, a variety of performances and a multi-ethnic food court. The event is free and races will be held on Meadow Lake within the park rain or shine. Bring the entire family and enjoy as over 170 teams and more than 2,000 participants compete with each other and celebrate the “Year of the Rabbit.” From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. The jam session is open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, and music educators. All are welcome and encouraged to come and listen. Jam sessions are led by Queens Jazz Overground. Starts at 7 p.m., located at Flushing Town Hall. Every Wednesday evening through August 21, Socrates Sculpture park is hosting an eight-week international fi lm festival featuring cinematic titles from Chad, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, Turkey, and the US. All fi lms will presented in their original language with English subtitles, and each showing will feature regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers celebrating the culture of the fi lm of the evening. Prescreening performances begin at 7 p.m. and fi lms begin at sunset. The festival is free and is located in the Socrates Sculpture Garden Alley Pond Environmental Center is hosting two days this summer for children to play with sand and create works of art. Children ages 3-4 (July 10) and ages 5-7 (July 27) can come play in a sand table, create beautiful pictures using colored sand, meet live, sand-dwelling animals and enjoy a snack.
