It’s time to kick them to the curb and get back in the market for a summer-friendly pair of sneaks. Nike has always dominated this fi eld, with its massive selection. Avid fans of Air Jordans still wait on line outside of stores like Foot Locker for dozens of hours just for the chance to get a pair of shoes the basketball great wore years ago. While not all Jordans are created equal, some pairs can look truly slick and worthy of the price of admission, which is high. Pony Hi-Top Sneakers are a ordable, yet stylish, while masquerading as an upscale sneak. Of course, you have the other main staples: Adidas shell tops and Puma low tops. Faded t-shirts It doesn’t matter where you fi nd them (and you can fi nd them anywhere nowadays), these tees can be fun to wear. They’re stylish too. Whether the design is from your favorite childhood cartoon, movie or sports team, the shirts give you a retro feel while at the same time appearing modern. Baseball caps It’s considered taboo by many diehard baseball fans to wear a team cap just for style. But there are just so many awesome looking ones, it’s okay to experiment for the sake of fashion. For instance, if you’re a Colorado Rockies fan, their purple cap may not match the red polo shirt you decided to wear. But a black Miami Marlins one may. Plus, millions of Yankees fans sport the classic cap, yet many wouldn’t be able to name three players on the team. Sunglasses What’s summer without a pair of shades? They don’t have to be expensive. They just have to be had. Immediately. A solid $10 pair will do, and honestly, most people won’t distinguish the di erence. Plus, you won’t feel bad if (and when) you do lose them. Shorts This is an obvious one. It’s 90 degrees and humid. We’re talking New York City humid where you can cut that thick air with a knife. You don’t want to wear pants. Shorts get a bum rap among some fashion police but before they blow the whistle, understand there are a variety of shorts that could make you look good and feel comfortable, such sport shorts for exercising. Get the right color, such as navy blue and it will fi t the bill. Jeans shorts may be considered a bit too ‘90s by some, but it’s an option. Khaki shorts are safe but a good fi t, considering you may want to remain comfortable in the heat. They come in light and dark colors and are easy to fi nd. For the more daring, plaid shorts are also a legitimate option. Plaid shirts Plain is good. Darker colors are a safe pick for most. Finding the right color that works for you isn’t as easy. So many of us stay in the ‘wearing dark colors box.’ But there is something liberating and exciting about breaking out some real colorful dress shirts. If pink’s your color, go for it. If the pattern seems odd, but in a fascinating way, take the plunge. By the same token, bad fashion happens from experimentation. It’s all about trial and error. Even legendary musicians cringe at their former threads. But getting it right is a euphoric experience. Polo shirts Right before summer begins, it’s tradition for some guys to hit stores to stack up on these summer staples. It’s another case of feeling comfortable while appearing ‘dressed up.’ The greatest strength of the polo shirt is that it comes in so many styles and designs. Surely, you’ll fi nd something that suits your style. Perhaps that’s why they are so universally accepted. You’ll see them worn by children, as well as teenagers and your dad. But don’t let that discourage you. The shirts are no fad. Messenger bags Maybe a more recent phenomenon is carrying. We’ve heard the ‘man bag’ jokes from Seinfeld but if you pick yourself a sleek leather bag or even a rustic themed messenger bag, it can add a dynamic to your outfi t that goes beyond extra storage. BY JAIME DEJESUS Although style is subjective and each style (typically) has its merits, here are some ideas to have fun outdoors and feel good with how you look in the process.
