The event also served as an advocacy rally, part of Queens Library’s “Keep Investing in Libraries” campaign, urging the city to continue its financial support. Queens Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott also spoke at the event, and personally thanked Koo and his colleagues for their assistance. “It’s an important period in the life of the library,” said Walcott. “Making sure that we continue to support our libraries — from the city as well as from the state.” After the reading, Koo and Walcott spoke to the children about their favorite books and the importance of reading. “If you are readers, you will be leaders,” Koo declared. The reading was the seventh in a series where local council members visit libraries within their district, engaging with the community’s youth and showing their support for the campaign. “The type of programs that we run here at the library — whether it’s this library or any of our libraries — are free and always for the community,” Walcott said. “We work in partnership with the councilman and his colleagues around supporting our libraries, and we also work in partnership with the adults who are here, and our union, as well.” The next event will take place this Friday, May 27, at 12:30 p.m. with Councilman Barry Grodenchik at Glen Oaks Library.
