Featuring a total of 85 vendors, the book includes coupons for local restaurants, take-out eateries, beauty and hair salons, dance studios and more, the Downtown Flushing Transit Hub Business Improvement District (Flushing BID) announced on May 5. According to Dian Yu, executive director of the Flushing BID, the coupon book idea started with the onset of the Main Street construction project, which includes plans to resurface the street and widen the sidewalks along the corridor between 38th and 41st avenues. “We were concerned that the construction project would impact the local business,” Yu said. “We have this coupon program to make sure that consumers continue to come to us, continue to support our local businesses.” Yu said the BID invited all diff erent kinds of businesses to join to program, taking time to approach business owners and tell them what the initiative was all about. “Downtown Flushing is known for restaurants and supermarkets,” Yu said. “But what we learned from this coupon programs is that we have very diverse businesses.” Coupon booklets can be picked up from the Flushing BID information booth, located at Main Street and Kissena Boulevard, local businesses and civic organizations. The coupon book is also available for download at the BID’s website. The coupon book can be saved directly to your phone; all participating vendors will also accept the digital copy of their coupon, as well. “We understand why people like to live in downtown Flushing,” the executive director said. “Because it’s truly a one-stop shop.” The program was funded by a Neighborhood 360° grant recently awarded by the NYC Department of Small Business Services. The program was created to identify, develop and launch commercials revitalization projects in partnership with local stakeholders, like the Flushing BID. New Queens County Bar Association leaders installed The Queens County Bar Association held its 140th annual dinner and installation of offi cers and managers on May 4 at Terrace on the Park in Flushing. Retired Justice Joe Golia had the honor of swearing in Gregory Newman as the association’s new president. Judge Golia would also install President-elect Hilary Gingold, Vice President Maria-Eleana First and Secretary Cliff ord Welden. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports was the event’s guest speaker.
