BY GINA CONTEH Want to travel the world but don’t want to hop on a plane? Visit historic Bell Boulevard in Bayside! Bell Boulevard is the star of the neighborhood of Bayside and a perfect example of the ethnic diversity of Queens. For those looking for a Manhattan meal without the Manhattan price, Bell Boulevard has become the best spot to get a taste of Latin America, India, Vietnam, France, Italy, Greece and so much more. Th is strip off ers a plethora of traditional cuisine from all over the world with each restaurant adding their personal twist to the dishes you have come to know and love. Sabor Guarani, the second Queens’ restaurant of Favricio Ojeda and his sister, provides customers with a taste of traditional Paraguyan cuisine at 40-04 Bell Boulevard since 2015. According to Ojeda, “Are strong points are the empanadas fi rst of all and the second one is the steaks. Th e way we prepare them are very diff erent then all the restaurants around here. Th ey are more homemade. Th ey are very well presented. Th ey are very well made. But the taste of it has a lot of love in it. ” For more Latin American cuisine options, stop by Sangarita’s at 40-02 Bell Boulevard. Th is restaurant off ers an extensive list of both sangrias and tapas. According to their hostess Yasmine, “Our drinks and our food is defi nitely diff erent than other restaurants on Bell Boulevard. Th e quality of tapas that we have and Spaniard cuisine defi nitely makes us diff erent.” Travel to the Eastern hemisphere for non-traditional Indian food at Masala Box, located at 42-2 Bell Boulevard. Th is family owned business has been serving the neighborhood of Bayside since 2014. According to Karan Verma, the fl oor manager and bartender at Masala Box, his family’s restaurant is one of the few Indian fusion restaurants serving the community and bringing something new to the diversity of Bell Boulevard. “We bring you traditional Indian food,” says Verma, “but we also bring a twist to it. For example, you won’t fi nd steak and lamb chops at traditional Indian restaurants. We have those and we add an Indian fl avor to it. We have something for everyone.” You can explore cuisine from a country east of India by visiting Pâté, named aff ectionately aft er the traditional Vietnamese pâté style sandwich, Banh mi. Pâté, located at 45-43B Bell Boulevard, is a Vietnamese café and sandwich shop off ering menu items ranging from Kimchi French fries, eclectic Bahn mi sandwiches and rolled ice cream. According to barista Steve Le, “We off er food that’s hard to fi nd out here. Our sandwiches are defi nitely a favorite and this adds to the diversity of Bell Boulevard. We are busy during the aft ernoon rush when high schoolers get out. It’s a good place to sit and just eat some fries.” Th ose looking for sweet, homemade treats can stop by either Martha’s Country Bakery or Th e French Workshop. Aft er opening in December of 2015, Th e French Workshop- located at 38-39 Bell Boulevard- is already a community favorite according to the manager Jenny Bergman. “We have our morning crowd: the business people that need to just grab and go. And then at night, mostly everyone sits down aft er having a big dinner at one of the restaurants here on Bell.” According to Bergman, Th e French Workshop off ers a modern spin on the classic bakery that she believes every community needs. Bergman says Th e French Workshop also gives back to the community by donating food to local schools in the area. Sandwich spots such as Th at’s a Wrap, Krave it Sandwich Shop and Eatery and Bareburger off er healthier choices for those trying to cut back on the decadent desserts. Bareburger at 42-38 Bell Boulevard has been serving Bayside since June of 2012. Th is local Astoria chain off ers organic, gluten-free options with the burgers, salads and sides. Dana Iroff , the manager of the Bell Boulevard branch, says that Bareburger is a go-to for heathy food options for all ages. “In terms of variety,” Iroff explains, “We off er a product that no one else in the neighborhood does. We are an organic restaurant with a variety of exotic meats like elk and lamb. You can’t really get something like that anywhere else in the neighborhood so I think we are special for that.” Whether your favorite spot is new, old, a chain, or family owned, Bell Boulevard restaurants off er their patrons great food in a great location with great prices.
