Samiya Fagun’s work will be on display for a year in the Cannon Tunnel, a heavily traveled corridor in the U.S. Capitol. Hundreds of students from across Meng’s central Queens district entered the nationwide contest, themed “An Artistic Discovery,” which showcases the artwork of contest winners from around the U.S. Fagun and her parents will receive round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines to and from Washington, D.C., and join Meng at the opening ceremonies of the exhibit in June on Capitol Hill. Fagun and other contest winners nationwide will also be eligible for a potential scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Fagun won the district competition for her watercolor drawing “Moments of Life.” She plans to attend the City College of New York this fall and is considering a major in art. “I congratulate Samiya Fagun for winning this year’s art contest and look forward to her winning artwork representing our Congressional district in the nation’s capitol,” Meng said. “I also salute all who entered the competition. Such outstanding artistic talent from our local high school students!” Forty-six teenagers from 13 different high schools participated in the contest. All of the entrants received certificates of Congressional recognition. Meng also awarded runner-up prizes to Ashley No, a student at Bayside’s Benjamin Cardozo High School, whose watercolor piece titled “Tears” will be on display for a year in Meng’s Washington office; Ruotao Ma, a student at Flushing’s Windsor School, whose ink painting “From Below” will be on display for a year in Meng’s Flushing district office; and Alexis Martinez, a student at Fresh Meadows’ St. Francis Preparatory School, whose mixed media artwork “The Subway Scene” will be on display for a year in Meng’s Forest Hills office. Hunter’s Community Middle School and P.S./I.S. 266 face off to be best debaters in the borough These young scholars are ready to become the best debaters in all of Queens. On Saturday April 16, the first ever Queens Borough Championship debate tournament took place at Hunter’s Community Middle School in LIC. Over 64 students competed to debate about issues such as public infrastructure and welfare spending. After making it passed the preliminary rounds, Hunter’s Community Middle School and PS/IS 266 debaters will be soon be competing to decide the official Queens Borough Champion. Preparation for bigger tournaments is also ongoing as debaters look towards the New York City Urban Debate League Middle School State Championship to be held in May. A special congratulations to all the competitors: Hunter’s Community Middle School, PS/IS 266, Growing up Green Charter School, Hawtree Creek Middle School, and the Queens College School for Math, Science and Technology as they work towards becoming the future leaders of America. Christ the King Honored by Bishop DiMarzio of the Brooklyn Queens Diocese The Brooklyn/ Queens Diocese’s Bishop DiMarzio honored Christ the King High School at a special ceremony in recognition of its efforts as the leading Catholic high school in the Brooklyn/ Queens Diocese for blood donations. For the third year in a row, Christ the King High School is the number one Catholic high school in the B r o o k l y n / Q u e e n s Diocese to donate blood and, in turn, help those in need. The school has also been recognized for the most blood donations as well as having the highest average donations at a blood drive. Last year, Christ the King donated 326 pints of blood. Through their partnership with the New York Blood Center, Christ the King has been able to positively impact the lives of more than 1,000 patients in need.
