FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com APRIL 28, 2016 • THE QUEENS COURIER 11 One Whitestone sinkhole the size of a ‘baby hippopotamus’ is a threat to elderly residents BY BRIANNA ELLIS bellis@qns.com/@briinformed Exercising caution when walking is becoming exhaustive to Whitestone residents, who fear that they may fall victim to one obnoxious sinkhole. Near a vacant lot located at 15-56 Clintonville St., a massive hole in the sidewalk has worsened over the course of three years, and residents worry that the sinkhole will only expand. “This is a major hazard. They need to fi x this immediately,” said one Whitestone resident, who prefers to remain anonymous. Next-door neighbor Rose-Marie Puleo Milcetic is especially concerned that the damage poses a threat to senior citizens who walk to the nearby St. Luke’s Church each day. “Elderly people in general are not looking at their feet when they’re walking. These people are coming every day at 12 o’clock for the 12 o’clock mass. These are the people that I’m afraid are gonna fall,” Milcetic said. “A baby hippopotamus can fi t in that hole,” she described. Milcetic said that she has persistently contacted New York City 311 and even spoke to the property contractor, Frank Ferazzoli of Feraz Corp., but nothing has been done in the past few months. The neighbor has also written letters of complaint to New York State Senator Tony Avella. According to Milcetic, Avella has responded to the letters and addressed the matter but a resolution has yet to be reached. “No one has come and this is ridiculous because they’re waiting for an accident to happen,” Milcetic A sinkhole on Clintonville Street in Whitestone. said. “I’m not doing this for me. I’m not doing this because I’m a cranky old lady. I’m concerned that some person, especially an elderly person, a middleaged person or even a young person is going to fall in that hole,” she explained. QNS contacted Senator Avella’s offi ce and THE COURIER/Photo by Brianna Ellis a spokesperson confi rmed that the matter was addressed to the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and the New York City Department of Health (DOH) on March 28. QNS requested a comment from DOT, Feraz Corp and 311, and is awaiting an answer.
