Bosom Buddies organization to fundraise for breast cancer at The French Workshop Since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Darcy Novick has made it her life’s mission to help those who have endured the very same illness. The idea for her company Bosom Buddies, began as a team name during a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Other participants quickly took notice of her team’s gear and loved the Bosom Buddies logo on their shirts. As a comedian herself, this inspired Darcy to turn the logo into a brand that could represent a lighthearted way of communally coping with this terrible disease. Her Bosom Buddies organization has three goals: to put smiles on people’s faces; to create awareness; and to raise money for breast cancer, all at the same time. Having fought through the rigorous process involved with overcoming breast cancer, Darcy feels it has brought out her true potential: “I always wanted to get involved with a charity but never knew what to do. Getting cancer and starting Bosom Buddies allowed me to get involved and help so many people. I am a stronger and better person for it and have met so many great people along this journey.” Since being offi cially founded in October of 2011, Bosom Buddies has raised upwards of $161,000 with support from sponsors such as JetBlue airlines, Weight Watchers, Applebee’s, WBAB Radio and the NYCB Family of Banks. Among these organizations is Atlantic Bank, who has generously agreed to sponsor the latest Bosom Buddies event, a fundraiser to be held at The French Workshop Artisan Bakery in Bayside on May 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will include music and food, as well as T-shirts and raffl es for sale. All proceeds will go toward the American Cancer Society and breast cancer research. Photos courtesy of Queens Beer Week The third annual Queens Beer Week kicks off on May 13. Queens Beer Week will take over 70 bars and breweries across the borough in May BY ANTHONY GIUDICE agiudice@qns.com/@A_GiudiceReport Raise your pint glasses and say cheers! The third annual Queens Beer Week is right around the corner. Queens Beer Week is a 10-day celebration of all things beer from the “World’s Borough” that stretches across more than 70 venues, with special events including tap takeovers, brewery tours and special releases. Though it offi cially starts on Friday, May 13, things will really be hopping the next day, May 14, with a special “Queens Beer Week Kick-Off Party” at LIC Landing, with the help of Hunters Point Parks South Conservancy and the people at Coffeed. All Queens brewers will be at the kick-off party, pouring their newest creations as well as some special collaborations brewed just for Queens Beer Week. “Queens Beer Week really focuses on driving people to come enjoy the Queens breweries,” said Dan Bronson, organizer for Queens Beer Week. “Friday is usually a busy restaurant night away, so we wanted to make sure that there were no Queens Beer Week events on that busy night, so we made the kick-off party on Saturday.” All of the breweries that produce in Queens will be participating in this year’s Queens Beer Week include Big Alice Brewing from Long Island City, Finback Brewery in Glendale, Descendant Cider Co. from Maspeth, Bridge and Tunnel Brewery in Ridgewood and Rockaway Brewing Company from Long Island City. Queens Beer Week is a 100 percent nonprofi t, volunteer collaboration of bars, breweries, home brewers and community leaders, aimed at celebrating the great beer of Queens, and the vibrant social scene surrounding it. Tickets and a full list of events will be available starting on May 1, and all proceeds will go to benefi t the parks.
