Established in 1959 on the former site of the historic Oakland Golf Club and a college of The City University of New York, Queensborough currently serves more than 16,000 credit and another 10,000 Continuing Education students. The college’s transfer programs are designed for students who plan to continue their studies at a four-year institution. Career programs provide the academic foundation and training for students who plan to begin or advance a promising career. Queensborough offers the Associate in Arts (A.A.), the Associate in Science (A.S.) and the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees, as well as noncredit Continuing Education programs. About 70 percent of graduates of the school transfer to senior colleges or universities, and others obtain the necessary skills for career advancement. The student body at the school reflects the diversity of Queens, with more than half of the students speaking a language other than English at home. The ethnicities represented at the school almost evenly split among African Americans, Asians, Caucasians and Latinos. The college has several dual/joint degree programs with its sister CUNY institutions: nursing with Hunter College and York College; biotechnology with York College; criminal justice and forensic accounting with John Jay College of Criminal Justice; and education with Queens College. Queensborough is also dedicated to providing cultural and artistic opportunities to students and the community through the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC), QCC Art Gallery and the Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives. All are integrated into the curriculum and are used as learning laboratories for students. In 2013, the college launched the Queensborough Academies, an initiative with the goal of increasing retention and graduation rates through an “enriched undergraduate experience.” The initiative matches every full-time student to an adviser based on their area of study in one of five Academies: Business; Liberal Arts; Health Related Sciences; Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA); and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). New software technology was also applied to help advisers intervene when students experience any challenges in their studies. Queensborough received one of 19 national grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation toward implementing the new software technology. Last year the school celebrated the opening of the Business Technology Early College High School (BTECH), an innovative new six-year education program that was developed through the partnership of Queensborough Community College, multinational technology software corporation SAP, the New York City Department of Education and CUNY. The initiative enables students to earn a high school diploma and an associate degree in either computer information systems or Internet technology. Queensborough also has more than 400 full-time faculty members, with about 60 percent holding doctoral degrees.
