In the championship game at St. John’s Prep back in February, St. Kevin was determined to finish their season with a perfect record and the championship in hand. The girls were victorious 49-46 in overtime, after being down by 10 points during the game. “Our attitude was one goal, the championship,” coach Jessica Villaplana said. “We spoke about it all the time. I would tell the girls to imagine winning the championship and how it would feel.” After ending the regular season 16-0 and being one of the top teams in the CYO, St. Kevin’s was not given a bye in the first round of the playoffs, instead having to win five games to bring home the title. “Once the playoffs came around we started to practice as often as possible. During the winter break we practiced almost every day,” Villaplana said. “We did non-basketball things as a team so that comradeship was built. I even would collect their cellphones so that they would be forced to get to know each other better.” Those team-building exercises brought the group closer together and allowed them to focus on the team goal, winning the championship, rather than individual stats, Villaplana said. “I am so proud of these young ladies,” she said. “They learned so much about each other and themselves. They saw what it meant to be part of a team.” Holy Cross coach Tom Pugh receives legislative resolution BY ANTHONY GIUDICE agiudice@ridgewoodtimes.com/@A_GiudiceReport Legendary Holy Cross High School football coach, Tom Pugh, was presented with a New York State Legislative Resolution from Assemblyman Edward Braunstein, on April 16.
