ADVERTORIAL There is no one person who can claim to be100 % healthy, or one who has never had any pain in his or her life. Although in this day and age we live in relative comfort due to increasing advances in technology, we still experience pain in some form or another. Experiencing pain is not limited to one particular individual. For instance, the elderly and construction field workers are not the only ones who experience pain. Children, teenagers, white-collared workers, athletes, and baby boomers also experience general pain. Whether we are characterized as active or less active at home and at work, pain always follows us either minimally or maximally. These days, the majority of our younger generation spend a great deal of time playing with video games and smart phones. Although I myself spent a lot of time during high school playing video games and using the cell phone, it was not the same video game and cell phone technology teenagers use today. During the 1990s, I only used my large-sized cell phone in order to call someone. I was not able to use my cell phone to surf the internet, shop online, or play mobile games. In order to play video games, my friends and I used the old-fashioned Nintendo console to play games like ‘Super Mario.’ Nowadays, teenagers spend even long hours playing with game consoles such as PS3 or Xbox. Teenagers also spend a lot of time watching the television and using their iPhones or Galaxys to text their friends. This type of behavior leads to moderate or severe pain in the neck and shoulders because individuals bend down their head and strain their neck to stare at the screen too long. This scenario is an example of ‘smart phone syndrome’. It is not pleasurable to watch our sons and daughters suffer from neck and shoulder pains due to an inappropriate posture formed during their teenage years. Many white-collared workers between the ages of 30-50 who mostly work in front of the computer all day frequently complain of neck and wrist pains. If similar symptoms are found in our children, this is not a good sign because our children may experience worse pain as they approach their 30s or 40s compared to the pain that we suffer from now. One of the signs of ‘smart phone syndrome’ is if an individual has his or her neck in a constantly forward position so that it looks like a turtle neck from a side view. This position forces the neck spine area to be straight rather than slightly curved as it was originally. This change in the curvature of the spine does not only bother the muscle groups connected to the neck spine area, but it also gives a tremendous amount of pressure to neck spine nerves and nerve root. If you begin to experience a sharp and shooting pain towards the back of your neck with traveling pain into your arms and fingers, you may be diagnosed with a neck or cervical disc herniation. Such conditions will probably bother you every morning and night with the strong pains that you may have never experienced before. As a chiropractor, I provide chiropractic adjustment, soft tissue massage, therapy modalities such as hot/cold therapy, electrical muscle stimulation, laser therapy, and flexion/distraction technique to reduce the pain and prevent further symptom. If you, your children, friends, or family members suffer from neck or back pain typically caused by a poor daily posture, I highly recommend that individual to have their spine checked by a chiropractor and receive complete treatment.
