Trekking the Great Outdoors Towards a Healthy, Active You BY CHRIS PERALTA As the last traces of the winter season begin to melt away, don’t hold back your excitement for the warmer days ahead. Embrace the longer daylight hours and the souns, smells and colors of nature coming back to life. Seek a healthy and active lifestyle by heading outdoors with your children to explore, play and enjoy all that the season has to offer. Take out the colored chalk and mark up the sidewalk for a game of hopscotch. The vibrant colors will add to the already seasonal pastels. And an added bonus, according to scientists at the Harvard Medical School: playing hopscotch for 30 minutes can burn between 150-200 calories. Your kids will have a blast, and you will, too! If cycling seems more appealing, put your bike to the pavement and start pedaling. An excellent source of cardiovascular exercise that has the added benefi t of toning and building your muscles, cycling can also trim your waistline through the burning of calories and ramping up your metabolism – even after the ride is over. Please be sure that everyone wears a helmet whenever you go biking. Even 10 minutes of activity is fi ne for maintaining a healthy and active you, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Start with that, and work your way up in small increments to 30 minutes a day. Regular exercise is also a great stress reducer. Play tag, hold a silly dance contest with your kids or clean the house! Assign age-appropriate cleaning projects to your children and yourself and see who can do the best job in the fastest time. Spring cleaning will not only give your house a new look, but with dedication, you will have a new look, as well. But don’t forget a healthy meal plan to incorporate into your family’s active lifestyle. By incorporating a diet rich in fi ber and low in sugar and fat, you can be on your way to living a more happy, full and satisfying life. High-fi ber foods such as fresh, whole fruit, raw vegetables and whole-grain products are suffi ciently low in calories, but will leave you feeling fuller longer because they take longer to digest. In comparison, high-sugar foods are typically high in calories, and calories not burned by your body are stored on your waistline as fat – not an ideal scenario when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and look your best. So pack a picnic lunch, get out in the spring air and take a stroll with your children to a park in your neighborhood. Take it all in, and enjoy some quality time with your loved ones.
