FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com april 4, 2013 • THE QUEENS COURIER 23 WHAT A RELIEF! COMFORT STATION COMING TO LITTLE BAY PARK BY MELISSA CHAN mchan@queenscourier.com Local leaders broke ground on a comfort station at Little Bay Park, marking the start of construction to a long-awaited project. “A comfort station at a great park like Little Bay Park has been long overdue,” said State Senator Tony Avella. Residents have urged the city’s Parks Department for about seven years to put public restrooms in the Bayside park. There are only three port-a-potties currently stationed there. Plans were stalled when funding provided by the state’s Department of Transportation required additional review and time for comments, a Parks spokesperson said. The site’s coastal wetland location and the need for new sewer connections also called for the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation and city’s Department of Environmental Protection to provide approvals on design and construction documents. But now plans are back on track, officials said at the April 2 groundbreaking ceremony. “The community has waited a long time for this groundbreaking,” said Warren Schreiber, president of the Bay Terrace Community Alliance. Manhunt turns up robbery suspects BY CRISTABELLE TUMOLA ctumola@queenscourier.com A wild chase ended in the capture of two men wanted for several gas station robberies in the borough. Police spotted the suspects driving the wrong way down the Clearview Expressway early Wednesday morning, April 3, said the NYPD. Refusing to pull over, the alleged robbers eventually ditched their vehicle and ran into nearby Kissena Park. One suspect was quickly arrested and a gun was recovered in the vehicle. An extensive manhunt, reportedly involving a police helicopter, was launched for the second man. He was found about an hour later hiding in a parked car on Moline Street off of Braddock Avenue. The two men arrested allegedly robbed four gas stations and one grocery store in March and early April, according to police. During at least three of the incidents, the suspects drove to the gas station in a dark-colored minivan, then the driver exited the vehicle, watched the locations and returned to the minivan. Afterwards, the second suspect exited the vehicle, entered the location and either displayed a black handgun or simulated having a gun under his shirt and demanded cigarettes and money from the register. As of press time, charges against the pair were pending.
