A one-alarm early morning fi re on April 1 injured 11 people, mostly children, the FDNY said. Four sustained life-threatening injuries after the fi re broke out at the two-story, twofamily private home at 169-03 65th Avenue. Neighbors said the mother and father, who lived on the second fl oor with their children, ran downstairs screaming for their landlord to call 9-1-1 when fl ames erupted around 1:46 a.m. The father then immediately ran back inside to save his children but collapsed from the smoke, said neighbor Stephen Chow. “They’re not okay. The kids got the brunt of the fi re — maybe third or fourth degree burns,” he said. According to Chow, the family, with at least six kids, has been living in the neighborhood for at least four years. A fi refi ghter and six other people in the house suffered minor injuries, the FDNY said. The cause of the fi re was accidental and began in the kitchen. It was under control by 2:19 a.m., according to the FDNY. “I always worry about stuff like that. I guess they forgot they were cooking,” Chow said. “By the time they realized, the fi re was shooting out the windows.” Additional reporting by Cristabelle Tumola THE COURIER/Photo by Melissa Chan A Fresh Meadows home fi re sent 11 to the hospital, four with severe injuries.
