The New York Mets held its annual Opening Day ceremonies on March 31 to much enthusiasm. More than 42,000 fans, many clothed in blue, orange and white, packed into Citi Field to see the hometown team take on division rival Washington Nationals. Mayor Bill de Blasio took the mound for the ceremonial fi rst pitch, along with six children who were affected by the recent Harlem building collapse. De Blasio, who warmed up in the bullpen, hurled a strike to the catcher’s mitt. Although the Mets jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the fi rst inning, they lost 9-7 to the Nationals. Off the fi eld, the team hosted its Opening Day Luncheon where dignitaries, including former NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and his son Greg Kelly, a news anchor for Fox 5’s “Good Day New York,” were in attendance. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, who is also vice president of Sterling Equities, was at the luncheon as well.
