The Quays, a corner bar located at 45-02 30th Ave. for over 40 years, will host Astoria’s fi rst Battle of the Beards on Tuesday, April 8. All types of face fuzz are welcome. “We were trying to come up with something outside of the box,” said Tim House, who co-owns the establishment with Dee Flattery. “I was thinking, ‘Geez no one has done that in Astoria.’ It’ll give us something fresh.” House said the idea for the battle came from an episode of “Wild West Alaska” in which a pizza delivery man donned an award-winning mustache. “There are a lot of beards around, so I fi gured we could start in Astoria,” House said. Participants can sign up for the battle by registering with the bartender the night of the contest or via Facebook at www.facebook.com/quayspub. The night will begin at 7 p.m. with performances from local bands The Green Gallows, Homesick Hound Dogs and Robbie Cook. Judging will follow the live music, and prizes for the greatest beards in the neighborhood include an aged bottle of Jameson whiskey, a golf bag and a pair of Mets tickets. In the past 40 years, The Quays has been the backdrop for a scene in 1993’s “A Bronx Tale” and, most recently, the pilot episode of CBS’s “Elementary.” happy meal after a woman threatened to castrate him during a knifepoint robbery. Kimberly Horvath, 39, was charged with robbery and menacing for pointing a pink knife at an unsuspecting diner inside an Astoria McDonald’s at 31-73 Steinway St. on March 26 and telling him to give her $20, according to a criminal complaint. “How about I rob you right now? I can cut you up with my knife. I will cut your b—s off,” Horvath allegedly told the victim, according to the court document. Horvath then snatched a bag with two DVDs from his hands, the complaint said. She was also charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a weapon. Horvath is being held on $7,500 bail and her next appearance is scheduled for April 10 at Queens Criminal Court. A judge also issued an order of protection against Horvath preventing her from getting near the victim, according to the Queens district attorney’s offi ce. In January, the 39-year-old pleaded guilty in Queens Supreme Court for the criminal sale of a controlled substance, according court records. Since last October, Horvath was also issued four violations for the consumption of alcohol on the street, with two of the incidents on Halloween, according to court records.
