I’ve been delighted to interview political, business, cultural and community leaders. I loved talking to (interviewing) Marty Markowitz and present Borough President Eric Adams; the remarkable MaryAnne Gilmartin, CEO of Forest City Ratner; and the brilliant Leslie Schultz, the president of BRIC. She has created and built a powerful creative force in Brooklyn’s cultural life. The state-of-the-art BRIC television studios are a part of the many programs and services offered by the organization. The night of the B Free awards was a mini Emmy awards bringing together all the nominated people and their devoted friends and followers. It was a starstudded night. We did not win but I was honored our show was nominated. There’s always next year... Catching up on decades Thanks to one of my clients at The Queens Courier, I reconnected with my beloved cousins who I hadn’t seen in over 25 years. My cousins Richie and Carole were together since they were 15 years old and I lived three blocks away. My father and her father the closest of beloved brothers. So we were constantly in each other’s homes, never celebrating a holiday without each other’s family. Carole was my older beautiful cousin, whom I adored and looked up to, as I did her handsome, like a rock star, boyfriend Richie, as a role model. My greatest delight was to be given one of Carole’s hand-me-downs. I remember how to be given her clothes was my biggest treat. I treasured each of her outfits. I was reminded of the power of handme downs when my 3-year-old Addy showed me the sandals she was wearing and said with great pride in her voice, “These were my cousin Morgan’s!” Gregori Romenski, Victoria Schneps and BRIC President Leslie Schultz Somehow, after I was divorced and after my son Josh’s bar mitzvah at age 13, Carole’s and my families drifted apart. Carole’s sister’s husband was my ex-husband’s accountant and my ex kept the relationship. As divorces go, he got to “keep” certain friends and family members, and I the same. I was actually blessed to have his cousin Ruth as a powerful force in my life, helping me for years in my crusade and founding of Life’s WORC, created to get better care for my daughter Lara. She then became an important part of my newspaper that I started with her help in my living room. So life took a strange twist, in what I often call the great adventure, and brought back into my life two dear people I had lost. And I did it by simply making a phone call! Over Sunday brunch, we shared our memories and caught up on our children and grandchildren, and then shared photos. Their children are as beautiful as I remember Carole and Richie as kids. Actually, they look as gorgeous today but with a few more wrinkles. Oh well.
