A PRIVATE CITIZEN REPORTS ON HER VISIT Longtime Douglaston resident Ann Jawin, Founder and Chair of the Center for the Women of New York, will discuss her week-long visit to Cuba last September, two months after the United States and Cuba restored diplomatic relations and days after Pope Francis made his historic visit to the country. Sponsored by The Nation magazine as part of the People-to-People program started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to promote cultural exchange, the trip included prearranged visits to a number of sites and private outings and meetings with Cuban citizens of various ages and circumstances. Ann will share some of the most meaningful photographs she took during her visit, and light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited and available first come, first served. Then, on February 18th, the monthly Open Mic saw an array of talented poets, singers, musicians, orators, comedians, and others perform their own material. Finally, on February 27th, actress Tracy Viergela Pierre (top right photo, kneeling on right) performed Slave Be Still, a celebration of African American arts and culture, produced by Louise Dente (standing in center), Founder and Executive Producer, Cultural Caravan TV (www.ccptv.org).
