40 The QUEE NS Courier • health • MARCH 6, 2014 for breaking news visit www.queenscourier.com ▶health Seminar to help get Queens covered BY LIAM LA GUERRE lguerre@queenscourier.com @liamlaguerre Borough President Melinda Katz is doing her part to make sure Queens is covered. Katz kicked off her Affordable Care Act (ACA) seminar series on Monday, March 3, to help uncovered Queens residents sign up for health care before the looming March 31 deadline. Katz teamed up with Jamaica Hospital to host the first of two seminars, where she explained the benefits of the health care reform law, which is known as “Obamacare,” and addressed residents’ concerns on the new legislation and available coverage. Bruce Flanz, president and CEO of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, joined the borough president for the event. The seminars are part of Katz’s effort to help sign up as many Queens residents as possible under the ACA. Anyone who does not sign up for the coverage by the March 31 deadline would not be able to sign up again until November, and would miss opportunities to access benefits. “The Affordable Care Act has succeeded in putting quality and affordable health insurance within reach of the tens of thousands of Queens residents and the millions of people nationwide who had previously been unable to obtain health care coverage,” Katz said. “All Queens residents deserve quality and affordable health care coverage and I want to help as many of our residents as possible obtain such coverage before the March 31 deadline. I don’t want to let any confusion or concerns about the Affordable Care Act deter people from taking advantage of its many benefits.” The first seminar at Jamaica Hospital featured a multi-lingual group of health care “navigators” to help attendees sign up for coverage under the ACA. Navigators fluent in Spanish, Chinese and several South Asian languages were available to assist residents. In case anyone couldn’t attend the first seminar, the second and final of the series will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in the auditorium (Room A1-22) of Elmhurst Hospital Center. New York State residents who have not already done so may sign up for coverage under the ACA by visiting the state’s health care exchange at nystateofhealth.ny.gov.
