sports Former soccer star from Woodside to be honored at Fifth Annual NYC Soccer Gala BY ANTHONY GIUDICE agiudice@ridgewoodtimes.com @A_GiudiceReport A former soccer star from Woodside will be honored for his tremendous work both on and off the pitch over the last 54 years for the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) during the Fift h Annual New York City Soccer Gala on Wednesday, March 1, at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. Emil Cohill immigrated to the United States from Croatia in 1952. He began his soccer career at an early age as he attended St. Mary’s Grammar School in Tacoma, Washington, where he was a CYO All-Star. Aft er graduation, he attended Fordham University, where he was the Rams’ Most Valuable Player in 1962. He later played for Dalmatinac Soccer Club in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League from 1963 to 1980. While still a player with the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, Cohill was elected secretary of the CJSL in 1976, a position that he still holds today, 41 years later. When he hung up his cleats, Cohill became a referee in 1981 and is still an active offi cial. Cohill is currently the director of the 40th Annual Herbert Heilpern Indoor Tournament, which will be played at Go! Tennis – Bayside Tennis and Racquet Club in Bayside this winter. Cohill was inducted into the Eastern New York Hall of Fame in 1999, and was honored as a Life Member of the CJSL in 2003. “In this day and age of internet and cellphones, Emil is a throwback who has kept things in perspective and at an even keel, always reminding us how things were done in the past without today’s technology and it somehow all worked,” said Dimitrie Draguca, director of CJSL. Also being honored at the New York City Soccer Gala are Charles Balsamo of Columbia University, Kevin Daly of St. John’s University, Chris Donovan of Fordham University, Mario Fava of St. Francis College, Martin Jacobson as coach at Martin Luther King High School, and Mickey Kydes of LIU Brooklyn. BWG dominates in the Brooklyn Italian tourney Many Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG) teams played in the traditional Brooklyn Italian Indoor Tournament at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn last weekend. With a great display of possession soccer, many of the BWG teams fi nished fi rst or second in their group. Th e BWG 2008 group won their fi nal game against Gold Coast FC by a score of 8-1 to win fi rst place in their group. On Saturday, BWG 2007 defeated the Brooklyn Italians 3-1 to win fi rst place in their group. On Sunday, the team won the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) championship in Bayside. Th e BWG 2006 White team won fi rst place in their division, winning their fi nal game against Queens City FC, by a score of 3-1. Th e BWG 2005 groups were split in two for the tournament. Both groups fi nished in second in their divisions. Th e fi rst group lost on penalty kicks to Cedar Stars aft er time expired with the scored tied 2-2. Th e second group won second place aft er losing their fi nal game to Soccer Fun for Kids, 4-2. Th e next day, the 2005 group played a year up, and again earned second place, aft er losing to the BWG 2004 team in the fi nals. Th e BWG 2004 group won fi rst place, defeating the BWG 2005 team, 5-1. BWG 2003 beat Manhattan SC Fury 1-0 to win fi rst place. On the girls’ side, the BWG 2004 girls split their team, and both groups met in the fi nals, with the BWG White team winning with a 2-1 score.
