Th e membership expansion was announced jointly by MCU Board Chair James Durrah and St. John’s University President Conrado (Bobby) Gempesaw, Ph.D. and Student Government President Chiara Miuccio during a special on-court presentation at the St. John’s men’s basketball game at Madison Square Garden on February 11. Th e charter expansion, which was approved by the New York State’s Department of Financial Services and which amended MCU’s charter immediately, gives MCU the ability to serve the more than 20,000 current students at St. John’s four campuses in New York. With the addition of students as a membership group, MCU is now able to serve everyone in the St. John’s system. Th e credit union was already the offi - cial credit union of St. John’s University Athletics, as well as the University’s faculty and staff . St. John’s University students are the second major college/ university student group to be entered into MCU’s eligible fi elds of membership; students of the City University of New York (CUNY) were added as an MCU fi eld of membership in 2014. “We are pleased to welcome St. John’s students into MCU’s membership,” said Durrah. “Th e addition of St. John’s students to our fi eld of membership is part of our continued extension to serve public and private colleges throughout the fi ve boroughs, as well as an extension of our growing relationship with St. John’s University. MCU has been serving the employees of St. John’s for many years, and recently partnered with the university to become the offi cial credit union of SJU Athletics, so the ability to off er our products and services to St. John’s students was a key step for us in our partnership.” “Like Municipal Credit Union, St. John’s has a long history as a New York City institution, and we are proud to strengthen our relationship with MCU to provide this service to our students,” said Dr. Gempesaw. MCU currently off ers college students a special product and service package – the MCU Squared Student Banking program – that includes savings and checking accounts, an MCU Squared student VISA® credit card, a variety of loans, and 24/7/365 access to their accounts through mobile and online banking. MCU Squared members also receive ATM fee refunds up to a pre-set limit and access to free personal fi nancial tools education through MCU’s award-winning Financially Fit education program. Founded in 1870, St. John’s is a Catholic and Vincentian University that promotes student success through academic excellence, global studies, and a focus on service. Students from 47 states and 123 foreign countries pursue more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees.
