As the fall 2013 semester commenced, renovations were underway to provide the Aviation Training Institute (ATI) with a new, state-of- the-art facility in Astoria. The 33,000 square foot space, designed exclusively for the program, opened for the spring 2014 semester and houses classrooms, laboratories, lounge space and faculty offices. The addition of a new air traffic control laboratory with radar and tower components complements the $1 million flight simulator laboratory to support students in their pursuit of a career in flight or air traffic control. Our partnership with Heritage Flight Academy enables students to pursue Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight certifications and ratings. Vaughn’s new library, that opened in fall 2014, provides students and faculty with a one-stop location for research materials, academic support services and technology support. OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AT VAUGHN Since its establishment in 1932, Vaughn College has met each decade’s challenges with a bold commitment to remain at the forefront of education and technology. Students are encouraged to take part in learning communities in which two courses, such as global civilization and physics, are paired with the same group of students to help them see the application of concepts in both courses. Students also have the opportunity to engage in internships with such engineering, management and aviation related companies such as United Technologies Corporation, NASA and the MTA. This real-world experience helps students explore career options and build expertise in their field of study. Vaughn is one of the only institutions in New York to offer a degree in mechatronic engineering and one of only 36 institutions to offer the Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative program, which provides highly trained air traffic controllers to airports throughout the nation. Students can also choose to pursue a flight dispatch certificate. A Vaughn degree coupled with specialized course offerings provide students with maximum flexibility in their career choice. OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Vaughn recognizes that the college experience also takes place outside the classroom. The College’s residence hall features panoramic views of Manhattan and a staff eager to help students take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. An array of clubs and organizations exist, including the Robotics Club, American Association of Airport Executives– Student Chapter and Women in Aviation-International. Vaughn also offers eight intercollegiate sports programs that compete in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC). And, as of the 2013-2014 fiscal year, Vaughn College became a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, which allows our athletics teams to compete on a national level.
