The College received approval in September to offer a bachelor of science program in aeronautical sciences starting in spring of 2015. This program is designed to provide students with a broad perspective in aviation, and foundation training in areas such as flight dispatch, air traffic control, aviation safety and airfield operations. Students will also have the opportunity to transfer in existing flight credentials as part of this program. Graduates will have the option to pursue positions in the airport management, dispatch, air traffic control and other related industries. In addition, the institution also submitted to New York State’s Department of Education two new bachelor of science degrees in electronic engineering and mechanical engineering. The College received approval for the mechanical engineering program in January starting in fall of 2015 and will add it to the current engineering offerings. Vaughn has also updated the general education curriculum across all of the degree programs to offer more choices to students in the core liberal arts offerings. This core is derived from the mission of the College, and reflects what the institution believes is important and elemental to students’ education and development. PROVIDING ECONOMIC VALUE For the fifth year in a row, Vaughn’s curriculum, faculty and overall academic reputation earned it a place in U.S. News and World Report’s survey of the best regional colleges in the North. While many families are concerned about the affordability of a college education, Vaughn remains committed to providing its students with a private college experience at a highly competitive tuition rate. Ninety percent of students receive some type of financial aid, and counselors work directly with parents and students to craft a competitive aid package. As a result, the recent U.S. News and World Report’s survey of the best regional colleges in the North ranked Vaughn third out of 46 colleges for the high percentage of undergraduate students receiving Pell Grants. The College was also ranked fifth in the same category in the publication’s inaugural Best Colleges for Veterans rankings. GRADUATES ACHIEVE SUCCESS More than 92 percent of Vaughn graduates are employed or continue their education within one year of graduation. Recent graduates have pursued advanced degrees at such institutions as Columbia, Stony Brook and Texas A&M, or landed positions at well-known organizations such as Lockheed Martin, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, United Technologies, Consolidated Edison, Embraer and JetBlue Airways. Vaughn’s master’s degree in airport management is uniquely targeted to an industry that contributes significantly to the regional economy. ADDING TO THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE Recent improvements in laboratory equipment, including a new leading-edge engineering laboratory, allow students to experience the application of automation technology through the use of robotic devices. Our engineering curriculum provides students with the understanding and application of design software such as SolidWorks and CATIA (Computer-Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application) found in a variety of industries. Vaughn was recently awarded a $4.3 million grant to create new engineering programs in mechanical and electrical engineering and a half-million dollar National Science Foundation grant to fund (continued on page 40)
