40 THE QUEENS COURIER • CATHOLIC SCHOOL • JANUARY 16, 2014 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com catholic school week Why Catholic Education? BY REV. MSGR. JAMIE J. GIGANTIELLO The Catholic Schools and Academies within the Diocese of Brooklyn serve over 48,000 students and strive to offer quality Catholic education at every grade level from pre-school to high school. But what makes a Catholic education worth sending your child to? A cross in every classroom. Catholic education is grounded in the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic, with an added concentration in the human person. At the elementary and high schools in Brooklyn and Queens, students are taught to work and live in a community, hold true to the value of respect for all and love thy neighbor as thy self. A Catholic education is distinctly different from other forms of education because of the very driving force which compels our teachers to teach in our schools, our churches to support our schools and our sisters, priests and bishops to believe in our schools; the call of Jesus Christ to teach all. To understand why 98% of our graduates continue onto college, versus 45% of NYC public high school students or why 99.65% of our high school students graduate in four years versus 55.4% for all NYC public high school students, one only has to know our motivation, Jesus Christ. As Catholics, we believe that all people have a great value given them by the humanity they share with Jesus. This understanding motivates our teachers to be sure that no child is left behind and every child that wants a Catholic education is afforded one. Our teachers are under-paid, overworked and dedicated to each and every child that walks through their door, not because it is their duty or profession, but because they are called to teach by their vocation as Catholic school teachers. While parents are the first teachers of their children, the teachers of the Catholic Schools in Brooklyn and Queens know that it takes a village to raise a child, and therefore take the success and struggles of every child personally. Moreover, our teachers are allowed to do this without the bureaucratic barriers or unhealthy limitations placed upon teachers in other school systems. It is the normal situation in a Catholic school to find our teachers tutoring students after school hours, or for a parent to receive a phone call about the progress of a child from a principal that knows their name. In the Catholic schools of Brooklyn and Queens we care about what kind of student each child is and what kind of adult each child will become. We prepare students academically, technologically, physically, socially and spiritually. Our Catholic schools offer Integrated Algebra I Regents Courses, Superkids Reading/Language Arts Programs and Extended Day Programs. The classrooms in Catholic Schools are bringing the latest technology to students by incorporating SMART boards and replacing textbooks with iPads. The availability of the various sports and social programs offered by our schools, CYO and parish youth organizations in our Catholic schools ensure that there is something for everyone’s interest allowing our children to adopt healthy and well-rounded habits for life. The cross in every classroom reminds teachers and students alike of the relationships and responsibility we all share as brothers and sisters. It motivates our teachers to go the extra mile and tells are students that they are worth the sacrifi ce. Discover the school system that is grounded in fundamentals, offers all of the extra’s and has a proven track record of success.
