Students in this highly selective independent study program choose their own topic of interest, research that topic and with the assistance of a mentor, conduct their own independent scientific research. The Science Research program is in conjunction with the State University of New York at Albany whereby college credits are granted to students who successfully complete the program while in high school at St. Agnes. This year our Science Research Program consists of thirteen sophomores, juniors and seniors, who all have a strong passion for science! These young women are researching various topics ranging from glioblastoma brain cancer to congenital heart defects to forensic anthropology. Currently the students are in the process of creating PowerPoint presentations of the scholarly journal articles they have read pertaining to their topics. The annual Nassau Community College Science Fair will take place in April of 2014, where the St. Agnes Science Researchers will have the opportunity to showcase their research on the topic “Speak, Memory.” Mrs. Leslie Powell, Science Teacher and Mentor for the program adds, “An advantage to this program is the college credit that is available to the students. After successfully completing the three-year program at St. Agnes, students can earn up to twelve college credits! Past graduates have started their first semester of college with not only a significant number of credits, but with a working knowledge of the process of scientific research.” Science Research is just another piece of evidence to prove that our girls are truly STRONG ST. AGNES WOMEN! www.stagneshs.org ADVERTORIAL Science Research member Phoebe Bacchus, Class of 2013
