STORY BY STEPHEN
VRATTOS
TPhoto by Robert Greenbaum he advent of October
signals the escape to the
warmer temps of Florida
and other parts far South of the
Macon/Dixon for many North
Shore Towers residents. And although
the past decade’s upheaval
of the climate may have slowed the
inexorable approach of winter, there
were more than enough rollercoaster
dips in the barometer the past
October to remind everyone winter
was coming without the slap-in-theface
freak Nor’Easter which slowed
New York City to a standstill the
week prior to Thanksgiving.
But apparently, members of the
Country Club’s Tennis Association
never received the memo. Although
the season may have officially
closed October 18 and won’t
officially re-open until the end of
March/beginning of April, nearly a
dozen hardy individuals continued
to play into November, keeping the
two remaining courts of the five
total busy. Donning the traditional
garb of tennis aficionados, despite
the chill in the air, these stalwart
players are having too much fun
to let something as inconsequential
as Jack Frost nipping at their noses
keep them from the game and
camaraderie they love.
“Though the courts have been
closed for a few weeks, die-hard
players can still sign up at the desk
and play,” said Tennis Association
member Jerry Mantell, who moved
to NST from Cedarhurst sixteen
months ago.
During the season, members of
the Tennis Association gather on
and off the court not only to play
tennis—whether in competition or
just for fun—but also for weekly
pizza nights, annual theater trips
and charity potluck dinners. And
membership is not limited to active
players. Those who’ve had to hang
up their racquets continue to share
their love for the sport as cheerleaders
and event participants, no better
evinced than these polar players
still taking to the courts.
“It’s a testament to the incredible
devotion we have for the game and
love we share as part of the Tennis
Association.”
