What the Recent Election Means to North Shore Towers
BY DEBBIE MARKELLKLEINERT,
NST BOARD
DIRECTOR, CHAIRPERSON,
PUBLIC AFFAIRS/
MARKETING AND MEDIA
COMMITTEE
DPhoto by Stephen Vrattos uring this past election, I
had the privilege to serve as
Queens Representative for
incumbent Congressman Thomas
Suozzi (who was re-elected to office
by a substantial margin) and
traveled around with him meeting
voters all over the 3rd congressional
district, which includes North
Shore Towers.
From my many conversations
with Suozzi, and observations of
him on the campaign trail, NST
voters have helped re-elect a real
champion of Social Security and
Medicare to the U.S. Congress.
This is more important than ever,
because of recent calls to cut both
programs to make up for tax shortfalls.
And now that the House of
Representatives has a Democratic
majority again after eight years,
those who seek to protect and
expand seniors’ earned benefits
have more power to do so.
In addition, Suozzi is the
Vice Chair of the Congressional
Problem Solvers Caucus, which
is made up of 20 Republicans and
20 Democrats, and he’s working
with all his colleagues to get things
done. He’s a real champion for his
district and really cares.
I also had the privilege of volunteering
on the campaigns of
our incumbent Assemblyman
Ed Braunstein and John Liu, our
new State Senator-elect. They
both want me to assure the North
Shore Towers community they’ll
continue to monitor a broad range
of issues relating to co-ops and condominiums,
particularly the unfair
way we’re currently being taxed.
They’ve promised to keep a vigilant
eye on the redevelopment of the
Creedmoor property and any legislation
which will affect us and our
wallets in 2019. The Public Affairs/
Marketing and Media Committee
will be addressing many of these
pertinent issues with public affairs
programs in 2019.
Just a side note, we all need to
remember to be kind to each other
in a non-partisan way and treat
people the way we ourselves want
to be treated. We also need to be
mindful that our issues—whether
it’s taking care of fallen tree limbs,
snow removal from our streets or
filling potholes—are important
issues to everyone. If we treat our
elected officials with respect, they’ll
look out for our best interests.
All our representatives, including
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli,
who stopped by the Towers for a
lunch visit and was appreciative of
his reception here, want to make
sure we know who they are, and
they’ve specifically stated to me
they want to hear from us, if there
are any issues which need to be
addressed.

of thanks. However, when
they do receive letters of praise,
they like to share them with their
friends and neighbors.

Children in Bayside wrote, “On
behalf of the children, families
and staff of St. Mary’s Hospital
for Children, we express our
immense gratitude for your recent

Your decision to donate knitted
blankets is greatly appreciated
and will assist in our ongoing

to children with special needs…
You have played a significant role
in helping children with special
needs to achieve a better quality
of life.”
A letter from the Women’s
Auxiliary of the Jewish War
Veterans of U.S.A. stated, “Thank
you so much for your donation.
Our veteran mothers were
delighted to receive your colorful
creations. It was so thoughtful
of you to contribute to our Baby
Blanket Program. Please accept
the gratitude of our mothers and
our organization.”
Such praise serves to inspire the
group to redouble its charitable
efforts. They invite you to join
them in this heartwarming work.
Your labor, monetary donations
or the provision of yarn and knitting
