Poll on Coll: A Real Razzle Dazzle!
Photos by Julie Weissman
An overflow crowd of NST
Women’s Club members assembled
in the downstairs
card room on Wednesday, November
15, to hear noted lecturer James
Coll speak on the Supreme Court.
After welcoming remarks from
co-president Julie Weissman, vice
president Gloria Beck introduced
the former detective, decorated
hero, professor of Constitutional
law and all around authority on the
Supreme Court and its history.
Coll’s clarity of presentation
made it a special experience. He
addressed the historical evolution
of the Constitution and the Courts,
comparing the different levels of
the judicial system leading up to
the Supreme Court, including state,
appellate and trial areas. Posing
the question, “What is judicial
power?”, he explored cases of
privacy and free speech, and the
reasoning behind the decision
making. He quoted historian
Arthur Schlesinger in a discussion
of what Schlesinger had dubbed,
“The Imperial Presidency.”
Questions from the audience
included Roe vs. Wade, immigration
and appointments to the
Supreme Court. The presentation
was concise, interesting and laced
with humor. As the members
became students for the evening,
Coll’s next presentation will surely
be met with great enthusiasm.
Kudos to Gloria Beck for
arranging this invaluable program.
Co-President Julie Weissman also
merits note for her untiring leadership
of the Women’s Club while her
co-president Roberta Gould keeps
things going down south.
