Towers Investment Club

The second Tuesday of each
month, a group of residents
gather in the Coleridge
lounge at 7:30 p.m. to teach members
to be more knowledgeable
and successful investors, and discuss
investment strategies and opportunities
in order to become successful
long-term investors. More succinctly,
the Investment Club may be described
as a social group with a
serious interest.
The Club has been in continuous
operation for 12 years and is a member
of the National Association of
Investors Corporation (NAIC),
also known as BetterInvesting.
Originally meaning “National
Association of Investment Clubs,”
the NAIC is a Michigan-based,
non-profit organization of more
than 40,000 members across the
country. Founded in 1951, when
five investment clubs formed the
national association, its mission
is to educate individuals on the
benefits of long-term investing in
common stocks. Later, with the rise
in popularity of 401(k)s and other
defined-contribution retirement
plans, education regarding stock
and bond mutual funds was added.
Depending on membership level,
members have access to online
investment tools, educational
webinars, First Cut stock studies—
contributed by the BetterInvesting
community—digital and print editions
of BetterInvesting Magazine,
local chapter support, and other
products and services.
As previously noted, members
meet every second Tuesday of
the month at 7:30 p.m., although
there are rare exceptions. The
September gathering, for example,
met on the 10th of that month,
a Sunday, at 11 a.m. in Towers
Restaurant for a working brunch,
free to all members. A feature of
each meeting is a presentation by
a professional advisor, on some
specific aspect of investing. The
September featured a presentation
by money manager/retired banker
Ron Goldberg, entitled “Are Your
Stocks Hurricane Proof,” during
which he shared his expert opinions
on which stocks he believed
should go up and which stocks he
believed may go down. The most
recent get-together in November
hosted Judy Lev from Morgan
Stanley. Her topic was “Where
do we go from here?”
Every presentation includes an
opportunity for members to ask
questions. The information and
knowledge gleaned from these
sessions is invaluable, no better
evidenced than by the success of
the club. At the November 14 meeting,
Club Treasurer Mort Ofsie gave
us some wonderful news: January
through October 30, the club is
up 19.1%—we beat the Dow and
S&P! Perhaps more remarkable, as
of the September meeting the club’s
success was reported up 14.20%.
It had climbed an additional 5%
in a mere two months.
As announced by Co-president
Herb Cooper, our next gathering
will be another special brunch/
meeting at Buffy’s restaurant on
Sunday, December 10, at 11 a.m.
