Book club discussion of “The Golem and the Jinni” Co-Leaders Arlene Augenbraun and Bern Rosenthal have chosen “The Golem and the Jinni,” a debut novel by Helene Wecker, as the next selection for the group. A work of historical fiction and fantasy, the book is set in Manhattan at the turn of the 19th Century, blending Jewish and Arab folklore and mythology. In Jewish folklore, a golem is a being, created entirely from inanimate matter (most often clay or mud), brought magically to life, while a Jinni (or “genie”) is a supernatural spirit of Arab mythology. The two in “The Golem and the Jinni” are respectively presented as a woman and a male, each brought to life. It is a tale of two nonhumans living in a human world.
