Comedy Tonight! 10 North Shore Towers Courier n November 2016 If you happened to hear more revelry than usual while passing the doors to Towers on the Green on Friday evening, September 30, you may have blamed the blustery weather driving more partying patrons than normal into the comforting arms of the venerable catering hall’s popular Happy Hour. But the joyous atmosphere on this particular Friday had less to do with the yucky conditions outside and more to do with the yucks inside, as proprietors Buffy and Angelo presented their very first comedy night at the Towers. For $25, attendees enjoyed a two-hour show, featuring four professional comedians, and a delicious all-you-can-eat hot appetizer buffet. There was also a raffle with nearly a $1,000 in cash and prizes, including a $150 gift certificate to La Trattoria restaurant in Astoria. More than 180 tickets were sold, though the inclement weather kept many at bay. Still, by the sound of the laughter from the crowd that did gather, the inaugural comedy show at Towers on the Green was a success. But the “Autumn Comedy Night” was auspicious, not only for being the first ever such event at North Shore Towers, but also for helping raise money for autism research. The night’s emcee, Nick Kapelonis—known more familiarly in professional stand-up circles as “N.Y. Nik”—is the father of a son with Asperger’s Syndrome, Host N.Y. NIK and opener Evan Weiss flank headliner Stacey Prussman a type of autism disorder. He’s organized more than fifty similar events in New York City, and it was he who convinced long-time friend, Angelo, to host “Autumn Comedy Night” at Towers on the Green. Kapelonis has appeared at such prestigious NYC comedy hot spots as Caroline’s Comedy Club. He secured the services of fellow comedian, Stacey Prussman, to headline the event. Prussman is a national touring comedy-club headliner, as well as a critically acclaimed radio host, actress and public speaker. She’s appeared numerous times on “The Howard Stern Radio Show,” such notable TV shows as “The Redeye” with Tom Shillue on Fox News, and was a host on the Emmy-Award–winning show, “The Best Places to Live” on PBS. Her big screen appearances include “Everything’s Jake” and “Girl in the Park” along side Sigourney Weaver. Two additional comedians served as an appetizer to Prussman: Evan Weiss and Steve Lazarus. North Shore Towers residents may have recognized Lazarus, who is a frequent guest at the co-op, where he can often be found playing cards downstairs with friends.
