Gone Fishin’ THE MEN’S CLUB BY PAUL NETTLER At our last meeting Aug. 14, approximately 75 members and guests sat mesmerized as they listened to our neighbor, Joe Reveman, speak and show a video about his experiences as a radio operator aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II. The video vividly reminded us of newsreels of that era. Hoiw someone could survive those multiple, life-threatening experiences boggles the mind. His last mission, his 24th, ironically The Men’s Club fishing trip was postponed a week due to bad weather. NEWS FROM THE TOWERS Knit & Crochet Club 40 North Shore Towers Courier n September 2014 BY LILLY COHEN May was a wonderful month for Migdal/Hadassah at NST. The annual luncheon at Towers on the Green on May 29 -- to benefit cardiovascular research and education programs -- was a great success. It attracted 150 guests and exceeded fundraising goals. Co-President Judy Paris spoke about Hadassah’s new initiative in the U.S. and Israel, “Ëvery Beat Counts,” which emphasizes women’s health. Robert Ricken, former president of the NST Board of Directors, was honored for his service to the community; and Bern Rosenthal was honored as Migdal’s “Woman of the Year” for her leadership of the Migdal Jewish Book Club. Both recipients gave moving, personal acceptance speeches which were warmly received by the audience. Migdal is very proud of its growing “Yiddish Vinkel” group, which meets Tuesday mornings in the Coleridge Lounge (vinkel means “corner in Yiddish). The group, started five years ago by former NST resident and Migdal President Carolyn Dinofsky, is now led by Ruth Sheradsky. The Vinkel’s focus us on keeping the Yiddidh Wendy K. Goidel l a n g u a g e , culture and literature alive. Its 28 members (including men) enjoy the camaraderie and participatory nature of the group. Typically, member develop programs, bring materials to class, or read Yiddish stories from “The Fovertz” (The Daily Forward newspaper) to the class. Tuition is $18 for eight sessions. Call Ruth Sheradsky at (718) 819- 8149 for information. At the end of May, our membership was delighted to learn that the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem came to an agreement with the State of Israel, This bodes well for the financial future of the hospital and research programs and for the American Hadassah organization. The North Shore Towers Knit and Crochet group has been providing handmade lap blankets for veterans in hospitals and scarves and hats for military on active duty. As can be seen by the letter below, the items sent are very much appreciated. Members pay $2 each month to help cover the costs of yarn and needles. The group is asking veterans, their families, and the public for tax deductible cash donations to help defray costs. Thank you in advance for your generosity. occurred on Friday the 13th in April, 1945, just a few weeks before the war in Europe ended. His plane crashed on landing and he was pulled out of the wreckage by his buddies just before the plane blew up. His presentation pointedly reminded us of the sacrifices made by his generation. Truly, the angels were on his side. Afterwards, Joe was surrounded by several of our membership who had similar stories to tell. At the business portion of our meeting it was announced that the club raised over $500 for the American Cancer Society. It was also announced that our membership now stands at 112. Although our fiscal year starts in October, when the annual dues of $60 is due, if you join us now, you will be paid up until October of 2015. For further information, contact Leo Tujak at leotxrx@gmail.com. We are also working with a discount restaurant program wherein our members will get free membership and will be able to get discounts of 10 to 50 percent at restaurants both here and in Florida. It seems that we have a vast pool of people in our community who have interesting backgrounds, talent, careers or stories to tell and for the next two months we will have two of them speaking at our meetings. On Sept. 18, Terrie Rabinowitz, a psychoanalyst, will talk about relationships. And on Oct. 9, Jack Kahgan, who has a literary background, will speak about Franz Kafka. If you’d like to share your personal history or expertise, please contact our events chairman, Arnie Rabinowitz, at ar3804@ aol.com. These past few weeks saw many of our members enjoying several activities. The fishing trip scheduled for July 16 had to be postponed for a week because of heavy weather. When they did go out, they were rewarded with a beautiful day and calm seas. About 70 fish were caught, but only two were “keepers.” Arnie Rabinowitz caught the biggest fish and graciously donated it to the second place finisher, Toby Horowitz’s son. On July 24, 14 club members attended a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game after an early dinner at Gargiulio’s. A good time was had by all, especially as the home team won. It wasn’t Ebbets Field, but it was still Brooklyn. For those who enjoy a more sedentary activity, a Texas Hold ‘Em Tourney was held on August 4. On August 19, 54 of our members and guests journeyed to Caesar’s Palace in Atlantic City to try to beat the odds. Slot machines were the favored sport and most people were winners -- or so they said. Probably the biggest winners were those who just went shopping. The group was further rewarded by two movies on the bus. Future planned activities include a “Marriage Game” Night, a trip to the Tenement Museum, and a Bingo Night on August 28th. For more information pleases contact our events Chairman, Arnie Rabinowitz. For information about joining the Men’s Club, please contact Al Fuchs at afuchs98@aol.com or Leo Tujak at leotxrx@gmail.com. It’s important to note that the September meeting will be held on Sept. 18, the third Thursday in the month in order not to conflict with Sept. 11 observances.. Meetings will also start at a new time, 7:30 p.m. Migdal/Hadassah News Vets thank Knitting Club for Assistance
