HADASSAH’S ROOTS
Hadassah was established in
1920. Do you know why it has
survived as a global organization
for over 100 years?
First, the organization is made up
of many chapters around the world.
Each chapter was organized by
women volunteers from each generation
standing on the shoulders of
the generation before them. Some
are sponsored by mothers or grandmothers
and most of the women
become Life Members. Hadassah
women use their “Power to Do.”
They are imbued with the spirit to
“Heal the World,” a concept inherited
along with their DNA.
NST’S MIGDAL CHAPTER WORKS
FOR GOOD CAUSES
The Migdal Chapter of North
Shore Towers is made up of over
340 members who are at the heart
of everything we do. That is why
during the pandemic, while living
in a “Twilight Zone” type of existence,
the Executive Board planned
many activities via Zoom for its
members.
As you can imagine, raising
funds was difficult. However,
if you read the April and May
articles in our monthly Courier
Column (as many do), we successfully
joined the Nassau Region
for the Walkathon for Stem Cell
Research. In fact we continued
the Drive through the month of
May. Due to the generosity some
of our members plus relatives and
friends, we were able to raise
thousands of dollars earmarked
for Stem Cell Research.
If you contributed you have
done a Mitzvah! By the way, it is
never too late to donate.
Make out your check to
Hadassah and indicate “For Stem
Cell Research” in the memo line.
Place the check in an envelope
with your name and apartment
number and leave it with your
concierge addressed to:
Building 1 - Zona Schreiber
Apt. 12A
Building 2 - Dee-Dee Goidel
Apt. 29N
Building 3 - Marcia Jacobson
Apt. 25L
It is important to remember
that Hadassah does not spend
money to raise funds; all contributions
go directly to research
and the medical breakthroughs
are shared globally, regardless
of political or religious
affiliations.

MIGDAL HADASSAH BOOK CLUB
ZOOM DISCUSSION:
THE LAST WATCHMAN OF
OLD CAIRO
Wednesday, June 30, 4:00 pm
We lived through brutal March
winds and violent April rain storms,
but May brought not only flowers
but idyllic sunny weather. The
Migdal Executive Board members
have the best interest of Migdal
Chapter members who want to
extend their time socializing and
absorbing Vitamin D in the Garden
Plaza or Pool Areas. As an accommodation,
the Book Discussion has
changed its time to 4:00 pm (just
before dinner).
For centuries there was a thriving
Jewish presence in Egypt and in this
historical novel, we are introduced
to the ancient Ben Ezra Synagogue
in Cairo and the generations of
a Muslim family who served with
honor and distinction as watchmen
of the notable synagogue. Covering a
span of almost 1,000 years, the book
is divided into three eras starting
over 800 years ago, on to the 1800s,
and continuing up to contemporary
times.
“The three narratives are all so
wonderfully rich that to summarize
them here is beyond the limits of this
space… ‘The Last Watchman of Old
Cairo’ is only one story…but it’s its
own very real act of preservation, a
fight against erasure, a mingling of
history and imagination and mystery.”
– Natalie Bakopoulos, San
Francisco Chronicle
Arlene Augenbraun and Bern
Rosenthal will lead the discussion.
