Help the NST Migdal Chapter of Hadassah Reach Its Stem Cell Research Donation Goal
Appeal Continues Throughout May
STEM CELL RESEARCH
BREAKTHROUGHS
Read on to learn about the
many Stem Cell Research breakthroughs
that are being made.
Yes, as the song in Fiddler on the
Roof goes, there are “Miracles of
Miracles.”
• Covid-19: Their Stem Cell
and Immunotherapy research
made it possible for Regeneron
to become a major treatment for
Covid-19.
• Melanoma: Hadassah
Stem Cell Research studies are
being done in collaboration with
the National Cancer Institute
Bethesda Maryland. The stem
cell treatments are “unique in the
world,” aimed at strengthening the
Metastatic Melanoma patients’
immune response to a tumor. The
vaccination protocol can be used
for other cancers including colon,
prostate, ovary, lung and kidney.
• Kidney Disease: Hadassah
doctors have been working with
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
They have discovered the proteins
to be manipulated to produce
more nephrons, the microscopic
blood-filtering units inside the
kidneys.
• ALS/Lou Gehrig Disease:
Israeli Biotechnology Company
Kadimastein is using a unique cell
therapy. The research has shown
that in ALS patients, brain supporting
cells are malfunctioning to
properly support motor neurons.
The company’s technology has
made it possible to inject cells into
the ALS patients’ spinal fluid. The
Company’s unique cell therapy
goal is to slow the progression and
improve the quality of life while
also prolonging it.
• For multiple sclerosis,
Hadassah doctors harvest stem
cells from a patient’s own bone
marrow. Trials have led to dramatic
results.
• Orthopedic stem cells
are used to repair severe bone
fractures. Stem cells and platelets
from a patient’s own blood and
bone marrow are injected into the
injured site.
• Heart Disease: Heart cells
can regenerate following a heart
attack by implanting stem cells.
• Alzheimer’s: Researchers
discovered that neural stem cells
in the brain can help repair harmful
inflammation and generate
new neurons to improve memory.
• Parkinson’s: Researchers
are focusing on regeneration therapy
using stem cells to produce
new dopamine.
• Diabetes, Strokes, Spinal
Cord, Traumatic Brain Injuries,
Macular Degeneration, Cancer
are also on the list of major
breakthroughs.

BY DEE-DEE GOIDEL
Last month Migdal joined the
Nassau Region of Hadassah
in its Annual Walkathon
for Stem Cell Research. The walk
portion has ended, but the appeal
continues throughout May.
Did you ever consider that when
you donate to this worthy cause,
Stem Cell Research, you are buying
“Wellness Stock” for you and
your family’s future? Some of that
“stock” has already paid off “dividends”
for some folks suffering
with debilitating health issues,
including the more than 100 million
Americans who are affected
by so many dreadful diseases.
Life expectancy has lengthened,
to the point that people are living
into their nineties and many over
one hundred. Your donation to
Stem Cell Research today may save
you or a family member from pain,
surgery, extensive medication,
tremors and memory loss.
Remember, together, we can
make a difference for current
generations and countless unborn
generations to come. In the future,
stem cell therapy will help to
improve the quality of that long
life and provide you with “Health
Dividends.”
HOW TO DONATE
Make out your check to Hadassah and indicate
“For Stem Cell Research” in the memo line. Place
the check in an envelope with your name and apartment

Migdal Chapter of Hadassah thanks you in advance
for your generous contribution.
Jewish girl, who assisted Mengele
to keep order, witnessed Rosalie’s
frantic struggle through a window. It
touched her and she secretly opened
the door for Rosalie, handed her a
striped dress and told her to run.
“An exchange had been made: my
life for the mother who wanted to
die with her child,” Rosalie said.
Rosalie ran, naked and terrified,
but she found her sisters. The relief
did not last, however; Mengele
ordered another round of selections.
Rosalie’s sister Charlotte
risked her own life and grabbed
Rosalie’s hand. They ran for a train
holding those who were heading for
Germany. With Germany losing the
war, Rosalie and the others were
transferred to a camp near Dachau,
where they were practically starved
to death. Finally, the prisoners were
taken on a long march to another
train, which had been stopped and
liberated by the American army.
The soldiers told them that ditches
had already been dug nearby; it was
there that the Nazis had planned to
throw their bodies after shooting
them. Rosalie had escaped death
yet again.
“I was truly a miracle child,
destined to live,” she said. “I feel
blessed to be alive and carry on
the message of the atrocities we
have endured. We, the survivors,
have reached our declining years
and now we are handing over to
the young generation the legacy to
keep the memory alive. We cannot
let the world forget.”
Eva then introduced Gloria Beck
and thanked her for the help and
support in putting together this
year’s program. Gloria said, “This
was a special collaborative effort.
I’d like to thank Bob Ricken, Rabbi
Gordon Yaffe, our Hadassah members
led by Eva Kessner, Karen
Perry, Dee Dee Goidel and Marsha
Jacobson, as well as Nurit Israeli
for her poetry and Dani Drucker
for her beautiful song.” Gloria did
not forget the technical expertise
needed to put the film together so
seamlessly, thanking John Virga and
Marty Ragusa for their talent and
hard work.
Gloria closed the program saying,
“We honor and remember those
who have lost their lives during the
pandemic,” and lit a special candle
in their memory.
A VISIT TO AUSCHWITZ
BY DR. NURIT ISRAELI
Because I was born
to bear witness,
I went to Auschwitz
to see for myself.
Because I was born
to survive,
I passionately persevere –
stretching as far as I can.
Because I was born
to look after,
I weave safety nets
to catch the falling.
Because it was tried
by fire,
I revere the family tree,
in awe of every branch.
Because I was looking
for answers,
I went to Auschwitz,
and there –
where only the questions
live on – I spotted flowers
amid the remains
of a gas chamber.
There, amid endings,
blue flowers of hope
or perhaps my own voice
