The Masad Haganah recruited Kaye, a World War II veteran, in 1947 to sail as an officer on the Exodustype ship called the Hatikvah with 1,500 Jewish refugees. His mission was to get these people safely through the British blockade. However, the crew and their passengers were detained in a British prison camp in Cyprus. What followed for Kaye was an odyssey that included interment in the Atlit prison camp in Palestine. Kaye escaped from the camp, and a year later he sailed as an officer on another clandestine ship, the SS Director, this time successfully bringing 1,500 European Jews to their destination. Now with Israel a state, Kaye joined the Israeli Navy as a member of the new Seal unit. Today, Kaye travels to Israel frequently, and since 1994 he has been leading hundreds of teenagers on trips to Israel, paralleling his earlier experiences taking European refugees to the Holy Land. Kaye now lives in Bayside. Following his talk to Migdal, refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Lilly Cohen at 718-631-5228. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: the senior-citizen reduced fare.
