North Shore Towers Courier n April 2016 37 Serious Discussion Hadassah hosts successful and informative talk on Alzheimer’s By Gloria Beck On February 24th, Migdal Chapter of Hadassah had as its guest speaker Connie Wasserman, LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), a widely recognized expert in dementia. Currently she is the Associate Executive Director of Social Services of the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in Roslyn. Her talk, “Facts Conquer Fear: Is It Alzheimer’s or Just Normal Aging” was well attended and greatly received. Wasserman’s talk highlighted symptoms that we may recognize as having experienced at sometime, but pointed out the differences as to what is part of normal aging and when these symptoms may indicate something more serious. The PowerPoint presentation had a component of truths vs myths associated with older adults, such as difficulty adapting to change; irritated or angry most of the time; or no longer able to produce great works of art, science or scholarship. We learned that some of these symptoms, even if negative, could be ameliorated by social interaction and focusing on how to keep active in a healthy, challenging way. (l. to r.) Depression can sometime be diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease and conversely Alzheimer’s disease can be misdiagnosed as depression.
