The Migdal Chapter of Hadassah at North Shore Towers presents…
Hadassah Book Club to discuss “All Other Nights”
HERE’S WHAT THE
CRITICS ARE SAYING
ABOUT “ALL OTHER
NIGHTS” BY DARA
HORN…
“Horn propels the
love story at a thriller’s
pace; the mix of love and
loyalty played out in a divided
America is sublime.”
— Publisher’s Weekly Starred
Review
“Horn has written a stunning
historical novel that will challenge
readers’ preconceptions as they learn
about the role of Jewish Americans
during the Civil War. Her tale of
Confederate Hebrew spies skillfully
puts a new spin on a time period
that has been researched and written
about extensively.”
—School Library Journal
On Wednesday, March 27,
the Migdal/Hadassah
Book Club will meet
at 2 p.m. in the Coleridge
Lounge, in the Building #3
Arcade. A discussion of “All
Other Nights,” a novel by Dara
Horn, will be led by Arlene
Augenbraun and Bern Rosenthal.
On Passover in 1862, a night
different from all others, Jewish Union
soldier Jacob Rappaport is ordered to
murder his own uncle, who is plotting
to assassinate President Lincoln. After
that night, will Jacob ever speak for
himself? The answer comes on his next
mission, this time not to murder a spy,
but to marry one. A page-turner rich with
romance and the history of America, this
book is a brilliant parable of the moral
divide between those who value family
first and those dedicated, at any cost, to
social and racial justice for all.

Photo Exhibit of North Shore
Towers in the making
BY JUNE ROCHEDIEU
The convenience of this
exhibit means there’s
no need to go out in the
cold. It’s located in the large
card room on the Towers Cinema
level. Many residents are
aware, but many are not, and
might enjoy this photo tour of
NST as it came to be.
North Shore Towers was
built on the highest point of
land in Queens, set 258 feet
above sea level, which benefits
residents with a pleasant
breeze most days throughout
the summer months. It’s built
on a countryside setting,
overlooking 167 acres of
rolling hills with panoramic
views from many of the residents’
units. According to my
research, NST’s land was part
of a 20,000-acre Land Grant given
to Massachusetts settlers.
In 1923, Glen Oaks Golf
Course was built on the property,
purchased from William H.
Vanderbilt II country estate. In
1971, part of the course was
replaced by the NST apartment
complex. In 1987, NST
was converted to cooperative
apartments, at the time, the
only cooperative to have its
own zip code.
The gated community and private
country club was designed
by those who chose to live a
life with luxury-filled amenities,
tailored to those needs. Three
resident towers connected by
enclosed walkways for easy
access to food markets, a bank,
theatre, restaurants, salon and
spa, clubs and lectures, and a
country club, offering golf, tennis,
fitness and aerobics, indoor
and outdoor pools, and much
more.
History in the making is available
to see from groundbreaking
photos to the completion of NST.
