10 North Shore Towers Courier n February 2016 NORTH SHORE TOWERS Camera Club Marion Kashunsky took this photo while on a river cruise to Russia. During one of the boat’s scheduled stops, she visited a church. As she was leaving, Marion noticed this woman, with a “typical” Russian demeanor, sitting alone on a bench. Marion walked back and forth, observing the woman. Soon this typical Russian’s scowl turned into a small smile. Perhaps it was Marion’s “look” that put the woman at ease—during the trip, many of the locals claimed she “looked” Russian. Regardless, the smile was enough to lure Marion to approach, taking a seat upon the bench next to the woman, who began speaking to her in Russian. Luckily, the guide had departed the church, and was now present to aid with the translation. The woman was happy to find out they were Americans and started to tell them about her experiences as a girl during WWII. The encounter spurred Marion into taking this photo. It was only recently that Marion joined the North Shore Towers Camera Club, where she is learning to look at things through a different perspective. She can now focus on subjects in a clearer, more focused way. Marion is thoroughly enjoying the wonderful art form of photography. Two years ago, Marion began taking painting classes run by United Federation of Teachers in Queens. She later joined the Manhasset Art League. Painting is her main hobby, so it was only natural for her to put those skills to work on a photo. She found this one especially captivating and was inspired to paint it. The photo will be on display at the Douglaston/ Little Neck Public Library starting the month of March; along with other photos from the NST Camera Club.
