18 North Shore Towers Courier n January 2015 in Residence Artist BY STEPHEN VRATTOS North Shore Towers resident Herb Zaller’s love of drawing started at an early age, copying his favorite characters from the comics. He continued to sketch throughout his teens, a pad of paper ever-present in his hands, drawing people on the subway. His passion eventually lead him to the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan where he studied silkscreen printing. After graduation, he opened a silkscreen printing plant in Bloomfield, New Jersey, utilizing his artistic talents to create pointof purchase display advertising for such prestigious clients as JC Penney, Pepsi-Cola, Burger King and Phillip Morris, for which he designed advertising for the tops of cabs. Herb didn’t start painting until after his retirement in 1988, leaving the business to his partner who is still running it today. For the next few years, Herb and his wife, Alyce, moved back and forth between New York and Florida, where he started taking painting classes at Broward Community College. The impact of Herb’s teacher was such that after she left the school, he continued to take classes at her home. “She told me, ‘Don’t be afraid of anything.’” Herb has created 116 works of art since he began painting in oil, his preferred medium. “The oil paint covers up the numbers,” he says with a laugh. Although the artist says he paints for fun, he admits that he’d sell his work if anyone were interested. “All except my wife,” Herb corrects. “She’s not for sale at any price!” Channeling Norman Rockwell Senorita in serape Flowers of gold Lovely locales NOT FOR SALE!
