North Shore Towers Courier n January 2015 11 Dr. Leslie Shapiro: Bringing Patients the Latest in Laser Technology Dr. Leslie Shapiro’s Bayside ophthalmology practice has been a fixture in the neighborhood for over 30 years. Services ranging from routine eye exams, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery to cosmetic eyelid surgery and skin rejuvenation treatments have brought a high volume of patients into Dr. Shapiro’s office over the past three decades. Known not only for his skilled surgical hand, but also for his knowledge of the latest, most-cutting edge developments in the field, Dr. Shapiro keeps his patient abreast of medical and cosmetic advances that they will benefit from. One such example is Dr. Shapiro’s adaptation of the new fractionated CO2 laser rejuvenation and erbium laser resurfacing. “I had been using the original CO2 laser for about fifteen years, but there was a large amount of downtime for healing,” says Dr. Shapiro. “The fractionated CO2 laser uses tiny points of laser rather than one large blast to treat the skin on the face. Patients love it because the recovery time is significantly shorter.” While the fractionated CO2 laser targets collagen fibers to reduces wrinkles and refresh the entire surface of the skin, the erbium laser targets pigmented spots to even out skin tone. “Using a combination of these two lasers can take years off of the way you look,” explains Dr. Shapiro. He adds that typically only one treatment is needed to achieve optimal results, whereas older lasers required patients to undergo multiple treatments. In addition to the antiaging effects, Dr. Shapiro notes that the erbium laser treatment is also successful in treating acne scarring, which may appeal to younger patients. The new treatment is accomplished in approximately one hour, which includes the application of a topical numbing agent. Following the procedure, patients are given a daily ointment to apply and can return to wearing makeup after only a few days. Dr. Shapiro cautions that laser treatments are most effective on lighter skin tones, as lasers can stimulate pigments and cause discoloration on those with dark skin tones. He also advises against sunbathing before and after treatment.
