With a half-century in the business
of making people look their
best, licensed Cosmetologist Gary
Ferrara, who owns Brittany Beauty
Academy, has a keen eye for the
latest trends. A second-generation
beauty school owner with locations
in Levittown, Manhattan, Brooklyn
and the Bronx, the business is in his
blood. Ferrara spoke with the Press
about what’s hot this holiday season,
how much his graduates charge at
elite salons and what sets his schools
apart from the competition.
LIP: What is your background?
GF: I owned the school in Levittown
in 2000, then opened the Bronx
location in 2002. In 2010, I opened a
third school in Hicksville, but after
seven years I closed it only to acquire
two other locations in Brooklyn and
New York. I’m 63 years old and have
been in this business for 46 years.
My father owned the Robert Fiance
Institute and had eight schools. He
taught his five sons this business and
we all own our own schools today.
I also was a platform artist in New
York and worked on 57th Street in
Cinandre Hair on Madison Avenue.
Today, my co-stylist earns anywhere
from $450 to $1,000 a haircut.
LIP: What are the most popular
courses?
GF: Hair dressing and cosmetology
are still the most popular, then skin
care and makeup.
LIP: Do they have an apprenticeship
program?
GF: We are governed by New
York State to teach the 1,000-hour
curriculum to get their licensing.
Without their licensing, they cannot
produce their craft. It’s what’s
going to get you to the top.
LIP: Any “famous” graduates?
Long Island business owners who
come from the school?
GF: Brittany Beauty Academy is
synonymous with well-known
salon owners – Joseph Christopher
is a Brittany Beauty hair salon grad.
So is Sally Hershberger.
LIP: What are the latest trends?
GF: There is something called hair
sculpturing. Most salons are using
that phrase, which means to fit the
person’s face with the right cut and
color. We are now into skin care –
it’s a very popular area of expertise.
LIP: What’s hot for the holiday
season?
GF: Beautiful braids, ponytails, boho
flat waves, and color-melted metallic.
