The One Thing We All Can Agree
On: the Need for Better Roads.
These days, it seems
impossible to get a large
group of people to agree
on anything. However, on
Long Island, there is one
thing everyone can agree
on; we need better and
safer roads and highways.
While anyone who has
traveled by automobile on
the Island will acknowledge
the need for better
roadways, that agreement
doesn’t always translate to
sound investments. That
takes real action and commitment.
Industry leaders have
lauded Nassau County Executive,
Laura Curran’s
commitment to roadway
spending and infrastructure
investments for years,
but now we have the numbers
to back it up!
The Long Island Contractors’
Association recently
evaluated roadway
spending across Long Island
to provide a tool to assist
elected leaders in making
critical investments in
our roads. The information
was collected over
five years and averaged
together. Over that time,
Nassau County’s total infrastructure
expenditure
amounted to $270,048,612.
That comes to an investment
of $140 per resident
and $130,119 per lane mile.
That is precisely the
type of roadway spending
that we need throughout
Long Island to properly
remake and reimagine
our roads, highways, and
bridges, which for so long
have desperately needed
crucial upgrades and repairs.
Suitable investments are
also vital in creating jobs
and growing our economy
for the long term. Nassau
County’s road investments
reflect that success.
Compare the spending in
Nassau to the Town of Riverhead
in Suffolk, coming
in at $38.91 per resident,
and (in last place of the 12
areas surveyed in Suffolk
County), $3,123 per lane
mile.
Other respectable investors
to their roads and
highways include the Town
of Hempstead ($30,337,059),
the Town of Brookhaven
($27,478,041), and Oyster
Bay ($19,240,634). These
towns are leading the way
to a safer, better Island.
When times are difficult,
building and investing
in our future is key to
getting a community back
on its feet. What is needed
now is a continued commitment
to reimagining
our roads, highways, and
transportation infrastructure.
That way, everyone
on Long Island can travel
safely and smartly.
The numbers speak for
themselves.
