JLETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
une not only ushers in the return of another
glorious summer to Long Island, but also a
celebration of the dads in our lives.
It was 10 years ago that I lost my beloved dad,
Martin Adler, at 86 years of age. But for me, he was
my daddy and even at 86, I didn’t want to lose him.
After all, he was my biggest cheerleader, a gentle, kind,
generous person of great intellectual curiosity. I think I got
my curiosity that spurred me into the newspaper business
from my dad.
I always saw him reading The New York Times from cover
to cover. I know he would be smiling down on me as he sees
the quality and growth of our media company. He was my
inspiration and I’m delighted to bring to you stories about
other men whose lives on Long Island have enriched all of us.
In this issue, our cover features Long Beach’s own
funnyman Billy Crystal, who launched his decades-long
movie career there. We highlight how George To The
Rescue gave a wheelchair-bound dad the gift of access to
his Merrick home. And we also spotlight the father-andson
team Mark and Dylan Perlman, who invested their life
savings to launch The Argyle Theatre at Babylon Village
— Long Island’s newest community theatre, bringing top
talent to the South Shore community.
Speaking of Babylon, the hopping bayfront downtown
is the focus of this month’s Destinations column. Our
reporters bring to you the best
places to eat, drink, shop and
relax in this trendy hotspot.
Also, be sure to check out
coverage of our recent Long
Island Power Women in
Business networking and
awards event honoring the
region’s leading ladies. Get the
scoop on our next big event, the
HealthTech 2.0 Summit, part
of the Long Island Press Power
Summit Series. It will bring together hundreds of thought
leaders and executives in the tech, digital and health care
space to talk about innovation, integration, and application.
Join me on July 12 at Simplay in Hauppauge.
