DAY
April 7th
S For more information about the
tudents in the Cosmetology class
at Nassau BOCES Adult Career
& Technical Education (CTE)
program in Westbury are getting
hands-on experience in the art of
hair cutting and coloring techniques,
makeup, waxing, and nails - including
state-of-the-art techniques, such as 3D
nail art.
The 1,000 hour curriculum prepares
students for the NYS Board Cosmetology
exams, which they must pass in order
to become licensed cosmetologists in
New York. From there, a rewarding and
profitable entry into the growing beauty
industry awaits them. In addition to
learning skills in the cosmetology field,
the students are also learning other
professional skills such as creating
resumes, building digital online portfolios
(websites), business and money
management, and communication
skills.
Cosmetology Teacher Deena Borriello,
of Glen Head, who has owned her own
salon, teaches all aspects of haircutting,
styling, and more. “I love giving back.
There’s nothing like the moment when
you see that the student finally gets it –
it’s that ‘a-ha’ moment! There is a
demand for this service, and if you have
a passion for it, it’s a very rewarding
profession.”

Prom Tips
Prom is a time when everyone wants to
look their absolute best, from clothes to
hair to makeup. Here are some tips from
the Cosmetology experts at the Nassau
BOCES Adult CTE program:
• Find or take photos of different hairstyles
you think you may want to try.
Show your stylist a week before your
appointment so she has some idea of
what you want.
• Be realistic with your hair texture and
length - do what looks good on you. Do
a trial run before the day of the prom.
•
and make sure your skin is hydrated.
• Get a manicure the day of prom,
and coordinate the time with your
hairstylist.
• Try the newer gel nail treatments - they
last longer and won’t chip. Try different
colors and add some glitter!
The Beauty of Learning Cosmetology Skills
Students work in a classroom that
mimics a professional salon environment,
where they have the opportunity
to use their new-found skills on clients.
In addition, students are able to have
demonstrations from the field’s top
makeup artists, stylists, salons and other
business owners.
Catherine Breuer, 26, of Floral Park,
said that she’s been cutting her own hair
since she was a little girl. “People say
that’s a sign to keep doing it!” she
laughed, “It’s such a creative industry to
be in, and I love it.” Catherine said that
she wants to do cuts and color, specifically,
and this course is preparing her to
do just that. “I’m doing this to get
certified. I really like this class and the
teacher.” She added that she’d eventually
like to build her own company, and to
open a salon with a Speak Easy in the
back.
Student Lorelei Hess, 18, of Hicksville,
is a recent grad of Barry Tech. “I started
this class my last year of high school,

and I came back to finish the hours I
need to sit for the exam. I work at a
salon now, and I want to do this as a
career. Everyone is so nice here, the
teachers are amazing, they take their
time with you. I love it.”
